Freedom 1160 is going away

I doubt Relevant Radio/Immaculate Heart cares a whole lot. I've heard it compared to EMF for Catholic programming, though it seems to be focused on AM acquisitions while that's something EMF usually avoids.

Can't imagine Freedom 1160 will be missed by many. Not sure that station's been relevant since the 70's, when it simulcast with 100.3. The old KFHM 1160 gave it a valiant effort about 30 years ago, but it never was much competition for KCOR.

1160 KRDY made the switch to Relevant Radio on Tuesday. I'm sure it will get some listeners because it has shows that aren't available on 89.7 KJMA. I'm a regular listener to KJMA, but there are some programs on Relevant Radio that I prefer.

I don't think that KRDY will take away a big share of listeners from KJMA, though. Relevant Radio seems totally network-based, whereas the Guadalupe Radio Network stations have links with local Catholic archdioceses and communities, local shows, and a good amount of local advertising.

I liked listening to it, the moment that started airing Mark Levin's show at 5 pm. But I would often times miss it, because I don't have an AM radio on my cellphone. But the reason they changes was not due to the lack of listeners but the lack of money to keep the station afloat. Salem Communications bought off more stations then they could chew.

At least I have KXTJ-LP 96.9, KPPC-LP 96.9, KONO 86 (and on stream), KBPA 103.5 (heard in certain areas of San Antonio) to chose from so it really wasn't a total loss. If only Salem would have stuck Freedom on a FM translator of some sort. But then again, it's a business, they have to make money to stay afloat.

So, you were its listener! Of course, if you have a smartphone, you had little excuse to miss Levin. Freedom 1160 was available on iHeartRadio and TuneIn. I believe it also had an app of its own.

Actually, the two go hand-in-hand. You'll make the money to keep the station afloat if you have the listeners the advertisers want. In a sense, though, you're right that Salem bought off more than it could chew. It wanted to expand its reach and its offerings. Instead of being just a religious broadcaster, it wanted to offer conservative and business talk programming, too. It doesn't seem like all of those ventures have been successful. I call it "freedom-to-fail." To its credit, though, Salem realized it needed to pare down its offerings in those areas.

Again, if you have a smartphone, you have at least that. I live almost 1,000 miles from San Antonio these days, and I still listen to KONO-FM some evenings while walking the dog. I listen to 103.5 Bob FM on the way to work (and at work) sometimes as well. My car doesn't have a newer radio that automatically pairs with my phone, but I have a Bluetooth adapter that pairs with it whenever I turn the key. The dial is as big, or little, as I want it to be.
