Freedom TV Tower

Has the metropolitan Television Alliance been folded or is it still plan to move all of the TV stations from ESB to Freedom Tower?

Last I heard, the antenna would be cosmetic and the height (1776') would be mostly ceremonial. Not clear if ithe antenna would be functional if needed. Probably has not been or won't be decided until they find how much additional revenue that could be generated by using it. That is still a fluid situation until the building is completed.

The antenna project is more or less dead in the water.

Everyone more or less has decided to dig in and make a go of it at ESB and 4TS.

Now that the channel shuffles are done, I understand they are going to rebuild the mast and antenna system at ESB.

I had heard it was "dead" as well. But with so much time to go before they are at the top, I'm sure it will be reconsidered at some future date. As of now I would agree with you...subject to change without prior notice and your milage may vary.

I think the uncertainty as to when (and even if) the project will come to completion is a, justifiably, a big turn off to the broadcasters.
In addition, I'm not sure how much better coverage you'll get by moving downtown. There were severe multipath issues, especially with the analog VHFs, on Empire. That was the original reason why they moved to WTC in the first place.
I'm not sure if that is still the case with the digital signals. They are supposed to be a little more tolerant of multipath.
Also, now with the reduced spectrum allotted to TV, I'd guess that stations moving to the Freedom Tower would have to go directional and/or power down to protect nearby adjacents and co-channels.

The turn off factor was due to the memorial issue. The broadcasters needed definitive answers as to what they should or even could do. They didn't need the shouting, finger pointing, and insurance problem to prolong the rebuilding. Empire was all too willing to invite them back and do what was necessary to make it once again the primary location for the NYC broadcaters. At that time Bayonne, Governor's Island, and 4TS were all under consideration.

Not tolerant, digital hides it as unreceivable or break-up of the picture. I don't care how the engineers want to defend it, multipath, like death and taxes, will always be with us.

Not really. A lot has changed since 9/10, but the FCC (interference) computer is still referenced to NYC. This was a "bump in the road" that the adjacents are able to benefit from while it lasts.

My thoughts are that OTA will be dead by the time 1WTC is completed.

They are currently doing so.

But, everyone is locked into 10-20-30 year contracts. Moving a television transmitter is not like moving your CB radio from one side of the room to the other. Its a MAJOR undertaking, more complex than even building said antenna.
