Freeform Radio Help

??? Help a noob out ???
I started doing a freeform radio show at WCBN, on the late late late slot of 3AM-6AM Tuesday mornings. I listen to the station a lot and I consider myself pretty well-versed in tunes but I can't seem to make my show *click* like I hear how some shows are. I'm looking for tips and advice from fellow DJs, late-night, freeform and otherwise.
Thanks a mil.

I feel the key is listen to those other shows and do what they don't do. Radio has become repeatative and bland. Be original, do what no one else is doing. Its what we do on our show, The Fat B and Bro Show (thefatbandbroshow.com), and the response has been positive. Radio has lost its edge, bring radio back to where it should be.

I've found that in a "free-form" or "eclectic" music format, you can make almost anything work -- as long as the segues between songs sound good. Look for ways to match how the open of one song goes with the close of the prior one, and insert yourself for a quick live announce when you want to turn the corner on what you're playing. Also, don't backsell more than the last three songs you've played. Otherwise, it turns into a boring list that nobody's keeping track of, especially at 4 in the morning.

Good luck.

Good point about the number of title/artist backsells.
I use to refer to that type of backsell overkill as "obituary radio" in other words, "that was, that was, that was"
