Freeport AM applies for an upgrade

KBRZ 1460, taking advantage of newly changed FCC rules, has applied for a change in their community of license as well as a healthy power increase. Currently running 500 watts day/214 night non-directional, they want to up their daytime power to 8,000 watts, using a three-tower array. (Nighttime operation from their existing site at Oyster Creek would not be affected.) Basically the pattern would have two major lobes; north toward western Harris County and south-southeast back toward Freeport from a new site near Damon (roughly 23 miles south of Sugar Land). If approved, the station would put a listenable daytime signal over a good portion of Houston. What's not clear is just what the new "COL" would be. The application, which has a few typos, basically said it would change from "Freeport" to "KBRZ TX." Maybe it's supposed to be Damon!?!

Ah yes, "The Breeze" -- not so long ago, it was one of Texas best little hometown radio stations, in the spirit of KSHN, KULP and KOGT -- until it became a satellite-fed religious station with no local coverage. Let's hope the few remaining "hometowners" mentioned above don't sell out.

The new signal pattern would suggest a format flip from the Spanish religious stuff they've been running in recent years. But to what?

This application will probably sit on the back burner for quite a while, along with the upgrades for 1090, 1110 and 1280.

Just a guess, but I think these folks are like Sega, the people who own KLVL, in that they're committed to the format. I don't think they're looking to upgrade KBRZ with an eye toward selling.

So far as the other move-in applications go, the KTEK 1110 upgrade application was dismissed last year. You're right about the others, though (for KNUZ 1090 and KWHI 1280); they're still on life support.

No way these people wont sell i happen to be affiliated to them in some way and they are in the middle of moving their tower for kftg to the actual location of their church/studios and they will not sell i remember going out their to their location in freeport and boy was is scary!
