Freeport Maine AM Daytime Bandscan

I also did an AM Bandscan, refer to the FM Bandscan on information on the location. I used a Tecsun PL-390 with just the internal ferrite. There was so much noise that a loop wouldn't have helped.

Being a 60's AM DXer, I find some of those cities-of-licenses really odd.
WEZE 590 Medford? They used to be WEEI Boston
WPRO 630 is EAST Providence? What's the difference, hi
WEEI 850 used to be, staunchly, WHDH 'Boston'
WROL 950 'Saugus' used to be WORL 'Boston'
When the hull did WBZ become 'Hull' ?
WQOM 1060 'Ashland' used to use Newton as their COL
WILD Medford? (I've heard of stations trying to move INTO a major market. But OUT of?)
WBIX 'Quincy' used to be WEZE Boston.
WRCA 1330 is always known here as WCRB Waltham, not Newton ....

.... and so forth.

I'm s'sposing that you were referencing the transmitter sites, Carl. Either that, or lots have changed since the 60's.

(Your 1570 might've been WVMX from Beverly MA)

Is the Desert of Maine still there in Freeport, Carl ? Lol

Interesting scan Carl. I'm surprised that you didn't hear WRKO especially considering all the other MA stations you heard.
Thanks for the scan.

These stations applied for technical changes at one point or another. To get the changes approved, they had to apply to provide the "first or second aural service" to an unserved/underserved community, thus "East Providence" (apparently separately incorporated) and "Saugus".

But Hull is well known as WBZ's transmitter location. It's never been a city of license, has it? Same for the others cited here. I think it's a quirk of the OP, who wants to measure distance from transmitter to receiver as accurately as possible.

I was thinking the same thing. Especially with the "Boston": 1200 audible. Also, you mentioned 970 WZAN. I used to hear them quite often on the Northern Ireland SDR.

Anyway, great stuff, Carl. Thanks for posting.

Should have indicated that they were transmitter sites. I don't like using City of License because that's not where the towers are from. Yeah, it might have been 1570. It was really really weak. Yes, Desert of Maine is there haha but most of the sight seeing I did was outside of Freeport. It was just a home base

OK I see what the OP did, he was using the transmitter location, not city of license. WBZ has always been licensed to Boston as far as I know.

Thank you! 970 is one of those 5KW signals that seems to have quite the range!

Yes! I don't like using the City of License because it's usually not accurate. Many transmitters aren't located in the licensed city and often quite far away (Particularly on FM but some on AM too) It can be 10,20 miles and even sometimes farther from the city of license.
