French in mono on 107.7 in Johnston

Interesting catch tonight here in Johnston, I happened to be going up the dial on the car radio and caught this station on 107.7 in mono playing French music. I got exciting thinking it was tropo or E-Skip, so I searched the dial for other possible stations but this is the only one I found. Another pirate? I could see something like this happening in Woonsocket with the large French-Canadian population, but in Johnston? I just don't get it. <P ID="signature">______________

How far is Johnston from Pawcatuck, CT (part of the town of Stonington)? They're home to the current WWRX-FM 107.7 ("Jam'n 107-7").

Far enough that it's possible that it could be a pirate, but not likely. Anyone with a decent radio should be able to get WWRX 107.7 in Johnston...probably with static, and in the car I imagine it'd be riddled with multipath, but it should be receivable.

I can't imagine it's tropo or e-skip this time of year...pretty cold out for that. Maybe it is a pirate. A dumb pirate? Or maybe a nearby FM rebroadcaster for satradio or an iPod. I've heard a lot of reports lately that some of those things are putting out a lot more range than they really should be.

Jammin 107.7 signal

There is no signal at all in the Johnston area. In fact, Jammin 107.7 fades out completely after you pass exit 5 (West Greenwich, RI) on 95 North. It does not even scan on the dial until you are close to the Connecticut border in southwest Rhode Island. Radio-Locator is way off on the coverage map. I have a really good car radio that gets Jam'n 94.5 from Boston right down to exit 5 on 95, but Jammin 107.7's signal can only be heard loud and clear in southwest Rhode Island.

Radio-Locator got it wrong??? I am shocked, yes SHOCKED am I!!! :)

Seriously, though...I used to listen to 102.3 a little bit when it was a rock/heavy metal station when driving around that area (I grew up in CT) but I never tried to get it in Rhode Island so I'll gladly defer to your report. Interesting it's that weak, though...but looking at the specs I didn't realize it's a ND antenna. So if it's a omni antenna yet the contour shows a big null to the northeast, there must be a hill in the way somewhere. Certainly would explain no signal in Johnston.

Either way, I'd say that seals the original question, though...it's a pirate! ;-)
