Fresh 1027

I Like the name "Fresh", but the music? Pink at 6am in the morning???? That's SOFT? After what i've heard so far it will be lucky to get a 2.0 right a long side of Jack, Free FM, Mix and Blink.

Look for the programming guru Joel Hollander and Co to make "Fresh" the new flavor moniker of the year and to import a bunch of non NY talent.

Look for 'ktu to be back into the 3's soon.

Does the average radio listener in New York even care about 102.7 anymore? Or any of the CBS fm stations for that matter? It's just a joke to them.

I think with all the talk about 102.7 possibly going "lighter than lite," many people strayed from the idea that they could put on an AC that's not very "lite."

They may be using the "today's soft music" slogan, however, the music has been mostly from the 90s to today thus far, just on the (relatively) lighter end of the spectrum. They haven't played much from before 1990 and nothing from before the 80s.

Lite FM also plays Pink and other artists who are not really very soft.

I would like to throw up a theory for you. There is an audience out there who can't stand Z100, think Lite is too old, and PLJ is too heavy. I would guess that the target would be around 25 to 44 with (their dream of) the average listener being a 32-33 year old woman, with a young family.

Thoughs...

That's why there is XM.

Anyone who listened to 102.7 left for Deep Tracks XM40. That includes Dan Neer.

Dude you dont get it!

LTW is far from "soft' too, So if they can grab even one third of LTW's 7 share ( or whatever the heck they have now) if WNEW gets a 2 share then they're doing better than that frequency has done in years. they are a perrenial low to mid 1's sttaion. A 2 share would be a godsend to them and with them doing "classic dance" neither WNEW or KTu was about to crack a 3 share, it was just not possible given the saturation of the market with the same crap. Between jack, KTU, LTw and Mix there really was no need for four different stations in NYC to be playing "I will survive" and "It's raining men". They made a smart move with the the format although "fresh" is about as bad a handle as you can get, that will not age well, Blink was actually better than Fresh!.

I actually think the Fresh monkier is not bad. Perhaps Fresh will knock WLTW out of the number 1 spot since Fresh seems to be a hipper version of ac. LITE does play a wide variety of music but to many hearing Rod Stewart is a turn off and with a hipper newer ac there might be a market....we shall see.
I'm no ac music listener but if I had to choose I would go with Fresh rather than Lite. With that being said my opinion makes no difference in the end.
Happy New Year!

This station sounds like a HOT AC to me Not an AC. It sounds like they are a bit "heavier" than "Lite"

While I do agree that some of the music sounds "heavier," the sweepers certainly want to make it sound like a Lite competitor. One of the sweepers actually said something to the effect of, "Turn off the old Lite for a fresher mix of music." What's interesting is that some of the songs sound like they belong on a HOT AC, yet they play the AC version of Rob Thomas's "Lonely No More."

In my opinion, Fresh isn't a bad station overall. I can't stand 'PLJ, but this station is actually somewhat refreshing. But if they are going to use jingles, dump that woman singing "102.7." It sounds revolting and quite annoying. Other than that, nice launch. Commercial load isn't bad at all... about 53-54 minutes of music in a row right now after the :20 stop set.

So far it doesn't sound very "soft" or "soft rock" to me. Only time will tell..(again ::)) I think it's worth a shot, as long as CBS has a PLAN, not just a few TV commercials. I still believe that if CBS had executed a well programmed country station geared towards the NYC area with great on air talent..aka Jim Kerr in the morning, they would take off into at least the 3's or 4's......better than they've done for the past few years. But who am I to say. Let's hope that ALL the homework was done ;)

WLTW better look out. According to Inside Radio today: Gary Berkowitz is consulting the re-imaged WNEW that will wedge in between Clear Channel's "Lite" WLTW and ABC's WPLJ, and target 25-44 women.

Since Gary has his name on it...you can count on it being a major SUCCESS in New York. Gary Berkowitz knows how to go after WLTW better than anyone in New York. Gary is a class act with tons of AC knowledge. Look out New York City Radio. WNEW 102.7 can only get better now.

New York City needed a FRESH touch and now has it.

What's with all the Blink bashing? I happened to like blink. I thought it was a great attempt at an up-beat variety station. I thought it was quite creative attempting to combine Z100 top-40, KTu dance from the 80's and 90's and PLJ. I also liked that little artist profiles they would do in the middle of song segments. But i guess no one else was receptive to this different approach to radio, i must have been 1 of the 10 in the entire tri-state area that listened. I used to tune into them quite often, then when they took the AC approach, I turned them off. How is this "fresh" creative? Many say its like Lite, some say its like PLJ. Blink was unique, they should have given it time.

With WNEW-FM adopting the AC format as "Fresh 102.7" this will for the most part give WKTU a sizable boost.

But how much of WLTW's audience will jump to "Fresh 102.7"? They are repeating some songs they've played earlier this morning.

But in my opinion the station sounds good.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

The station made a smart move. They sound like a MAINSTREAM A/C. It's that simple.
As for the whole "this station doesn't soft", or "Lite doesn't sound that light", welcome to 2007. We're no longer in 1989 when Soft Rock wasj ust Soft Rock. These are A/Cs that lean heavily on ballads, but will also play some uptempo and midtempo hits.
Hell, the Lite station in Chicago plays Vanilla Ice, as well as Bon Jovi's "Livin On A Prayer" and "You Give Love a Bad Name".
The station is greared at WOMEN 25-44, and to them the station's sound leans on the softer side, but thankfully not too soft.
It's NOT geared at older male radio geeks who are craving for Sinatra, or for Kenny G records all day long.

Nuff said,
Charles

FRESH might take a share or two away from WLTW, but LITE has such a massive audience that they will be able to absorb the loss. OTOH, the last thing WPLJ needs is this new competitor.

WLTW has had competitors like this before and they haven't been hurt bad. I have also seen these type of semi-hot ACs come and go in other markets. They usually don't do very well and don't have much of a impact on the heritage AC.

As long as WLTW doesn't overreact they should be OK. The worst mistake LITE could make would be the get rid of their gold and play the exact music as FRESH.

I will also say the fact that so many of the men on here approve of FRESH is a bad omen for them. I have noticed through the years that the ACs posters on radio boards like don't do well, the ACs they dislike (or never mention) seem to do the best.

Agreed, but remember WLTW has just dumped their established morning show and put the Delilah show on at night. Some major changes here at WLTW. This has left LITE vulnerable for new competition. Right now, WLTW listeners are dial punching to find something FRESH and have found it. Heritage or not, WNEW 102.7 can/will take a piece of the pie.

I think Jay is right but I dont think they're trying to do much more than take a share or two from Lite. CBS has got to know that Lite is so entrnched there is no wayy that they could ever be beaten. Even if they take 2 of Lite's massive share points they will still be in good shape. Also whoever said they sound like a hot ac is correct. THAT IS SMART becuase even though LTW images themselves as "Lite" THEY sound more hot ac than anything lite you'll find, well maybe not now that Delilah is on board, they're sounding pretty lite at night when they used to open up and play some of the heavier stuff. They play a lot of rhythmic stuff/disco on the weekends so no way are they a true lite ac. They're just smartly calling themselves lite to get the in office listening thing.

Very shrewd programming all the way aorund.

From a CT standpoint, this new Fresh 102.7 sounds a bit like Star 99.9 WEZN Bridgeport. From the NYC standpoint, they are going after PLJ, 106.7 and to an extent KTU. Well the name is new. But AFAIC, that's just all.

Right now I have Fresh 102.7 playing on my computer and I have to say it sounds like a great station. Good mix of music from what I hear. And from what the poster above posted I was just going to say that as Im from Connecticut also. Fresh sounds much like Star 99.9 up in CT. Good luck to Fresh 102.7 in the New Year. I think CBS Radio just found the right format for 102.7 WNEW. Let the AC war start. :)

The new format on WNEW's "Fresh" is not all that bad. It is a great sounding station playing the same music competiting against WLTW's "Lite-FM". I remember back in late 2003 and early 2004, the station was great on "Mix 102.7" since day 1, but they adjusted to a more rhythmic AC (pre-Alan Burns "Movin'") kinda format when Frankie Blue was there. It lasted after 3 years until "Mix" pulled the plug. Frankie was fired back in 2004 for using the KTU call letters as he turned into a KTU-2 format. But now, the KTU-2 era was over by this morning as the station turned into "Fresh".

I hope CBS is doing a great job putting together a new format which will bring in some listeners from WLTW to hear the new "Fresh". The jingles and ID's are not bad, but I don't like the "Mix" jingle and even some terrible voiceovers since I was listening to that aircheck during the last several months.

Great to hear it from day 1.
