Fresh AAA Leaning?

Am I the only one that notices that Fresh leans very AAA like the Peak in a way? They play Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metric, Fun., Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park, Kings of Leon and other AAA type artists next to Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Mars (locked out of heaven is AAA) and others. Why not make it 100% AAA?

Fresh is Hot AC, which is currently a very successful format around the country. Many stations within this format have been mixing in alternative rock hits along with the pop tunes.
Most AAA stations play classic along with current rock songs. Fresh does not do that.
Hot AC probably gets higher ratings on average than AAA stations, as it is more mass appeal based.
Perhaps Cumulus will flip WFAS 103.9 to AAA, if they do not choose alternative or mainstream rock.

Honest question: What is considered "mainstream rock" these days? With classic rock WAXQ really the only rock station in the city these days, and with the bands that XCountry285 mentioned (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metric, Fun., Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park, Kings of Leon) considered "alternative," I really don't know what one would hear on a "mainstream rock" station. Does WDHA in northern NJ qualify?

I hope Cumulus buys 99.5 and switches it for 103.9 and makes 99.5 Alternative. We need alternative or some type of current based rock station in the city. We have everything else in multitudes (except for 1 Country, 1 Classic Rock).

Yes, WDHA would be one of them. I believe WRKI out of Brookfield, CT is still mainstream as well. There are none that I know of here in Florida. A mainstream rock station usually plays more classic rock with a few currents & re-currents thrown in as well. They also tend to have a wider playlist seeing that they keep adding new songs all of the time. For the most part, mainstream rock stations have been around awhile (such is the case of WDHA & WRKI which have been doing this for over 30 years). There are few of those stations around nowadays which is sad IMHO. I liked the variety, but I don't have a PPM meter ;D Most markets have either classic rock (you know what that is) and/or active rock stations which play more new (heavier) rock with a few well tested classics thrown in (gotta couple of cheap channel ones down here that I can get). Unfortunately it's doubtful that a station would flip to mainstream rock. It would be either classic (although those are starting to go wayside ala "oldies" stations), alternative or AAA which would be the closest thing you would get to mainstream.

Re: Classic Active?

In addition to what I wrote above, we are starting to see what I guess what would be called classic active rock stations forming. These play mostly 90's heavier rock songs with a few 80's and some early 2000's thrown in, but no currents. This strikes me as weird considering that most of the artists they play have been releasing new (and successful) material since the 90's & 2K, but they won't play any.

That's part of the same thinking that prevents Classic Rock stations from paying any attention to the fact that classic rock artists actually do put out new material sometimes. Rush's latest album, Clockwork Angels, is a good example. If WAXQ listeners like hearing old Rush, why not play them some new Rush? But while WDHA does play several cuts from that album, Q104.3 ignores it. Sigh.

Fresh's playlist looks very similar to WPLJ's. Is there much difference between the two stations?
Comparing the lists of recently played songs shown online, it appears that Fresh airs more tunes by rock groups than does 'PLJ.

While we're at it, we should also ask if LITE FM is leaning toward dance with all of its uptempo records... are they becoming like WKTU? :D

Is PLJ trying to sound like Fresh? Even if PLJ is Fresh sounds better as Fresh 102.7 playsmore rock with Muse, Awolnation, Fun, etc
