Fresh Change

From Wikipedia - WWFS

"At 5 am on January 2, 2007, after playing Kool and the Gang's song "Fresh", WNEW flipped from Classic Dance hits to an adult contemporary format with a verge towards hot adult contemporary known as Fresh 102.7, with "How To Save A Life" by The Fray being the first song played"

Classic dance hits? I was never aware that that was their moniker. I remember when they signed on at the always leaned hotAC. What was NEW before Fresh. Can't remember...wasn't it the spin the wheel frequency for awhile?

For all the discussion this station had, I'm surprised that there's confusion. Fresh WAS a younger leaning Mainstream AC with lots of gold in the mix. It sounded nothing like Hot AC, other than some edgier titles, some of which evolved into Mainstream AC anyway. It is now decidedly Hot AC but I can't find anything about it on the boards. When did this happen?

I think no one really noticed because it was done very gradually. A while after Jim Ryan took the helm, most pre-90's titles were completely removed. Remember "The best variety of the 90's, 2k and today?" Then they inched back to a bit more of a mainstream sound for a while, but as soon as they changed their slogan to "Fresh Music; Better Variety," they have been slowly morphing into a Hot AC. Kudos to Jim Ryan, since he's done it obviously so subtly that few people have noticed enough to post about it. The station sounds very unique and focused. It's nice to hear them play new music first. IMHO, it's better than PLJ ever was.

I don't live there but have heard the stream before and after the change. The trades used to list it as an AC and it was responsible for most of the edgier songs on the AC chart, forcing acceptance by WLTW and eventually, all the ACs in the country. As a Hot AC, it no longer has that power and I'm surprised that it would evolve to that because ratings appeared to be solid as a younger skewing AC. Thank you for letting me know about the gradual change.
