Fresh LA

I was just thinking about this moments ago.... Why don't CBS Los Angeles launch 97.1 as FRESH 97.1? I think they have a real good chance with number if they go against KOST 103.5 in Los Angeles. I really liker KOST when I can hear it in the High Desert area of Victorville but I think it's time for a change in radio as far as Hot AC or Soft Rock. Nick, KN3ICK

Yea, when it comes to AC in Los Angeles, it does suck.

When I want to play AC music in our store, we are stuck with KOST. My 104.3 is okay but sometimes too upbeat to play in the pharmacy where old people shop. I play Fresh 102.7 sometimes from New York but when the DJs are talking about NYC stuff, it doesn't sound local.

MY104.3 is close enough to the FRESH format where there is no hole for it in LA.

Besides, FRESH isn't doing that great anywhere.

LOL, Neel, playing Fresh's NYC local flavor would only matter to the "old people" IF they have their hearing aids turned up....

True....I think what we play is more for us now than the customers since we gotta be there 8 hours. I usually switch it to Fresh, My 104.3 or something more upbeat in the late afternoon after all the old people have gotten their meds. lol. Once I played Sirius 50s on 5, and people were actually humming to some of those songs!

Maybe CBS is fooling us all and Fresh will debut on 97.1 rather than Amp radio. If so, then this has sure fooled a lot of us!

If you compare KOST to other softer AC's around the country you find a lot of the same thing going on. It isn't really their fault, that's the format. Listen to top rated KOIT in San Francisco and you'll hear an even more laid back style almost like a beautiful music station. What most of these stations have is little head to head competition. In the 80's and even for a time in the 90's KOST had direct competition and vanquished all comers. Magic 106, K-Hits 97.1(KHTZ), KBIG, the various Lite FM's, KJOY and later EZ and Touch 98.7, they all came in behind KOST and over the years it's gone through different sounds, more real when it started, then more up in the mid 80's and then more laid back in the early 90's etc... But it always seemed to rise to the occasion to beat the competition and the listener was better off for it. Competition seems to breed better programming and KOST hasn't had any head to head competitors for many years. Well now that KIIS has a new rival perhaps someone will go up against KOST and raise the stakes again. You may think that KOST sucks, but it's always done what it was supposed to do and has been recognized as Station of the Year several times and has had it's share of highs as one of the few stations to be rated number one in the city in the 90's and into this decade. What if CBS or someone else like Emmis decided to go mainstream AC? Would the sound of AC get better in LA? I think it might.

Actually, K-Hits 97 FM became K-Best (KBZT) in 1985 - still an AC - before it became KLSX less than a year later. KJOI not KJOY. You also forgot KNX-FM. KIIS-FM, with Rick Dees, was evolving from an AC just as KOST hit the airwaves as one in late 1982.

I would not say KOST vanquished KBIG as KBIG is still an AC today. The only competitor, and now sisters, that remained.

Maybe 97.1 should flip to indie rock with the name, oh, I don't know, Indie 97.1? Then again, maybe talk could work on FM if you had someone like Howard Stern in the mornings...
