Fresh tweaks

The station is now positioning itself as "The Best Variety of the 90's, 2K, and Today". Looking at their log, they do seem to have all but completely dropped the 80's. (I did hear The Cure's "Lovesong", from 1989, earlier tonight.) Seems like Fresh was doing well as it was, but maybe this is a response to WPLJ re-adding the 80's. The two stations seem to be moving in opposite directions.

It's also interesting to note that when Jim Ryan first arrived, he increased the 80's music, only to drop it now. They also seem to change their positioners every few months (seems like just yesterday that they started saying "Fresh Music, Better Variety"). But I'm sure Jim knows what he's doing.

'Variety' must have tested well recently because it seems like a lot of stations have re-introduced the word into their positioners (in addition to WWFS, KBIG/L.A. and KMYI/San Diego have also recently started using it.)

I think Fresh 102.7 sounds great lately. I've been turning it on in my office a lot lately.

I've noticed a few more alt-rock titles popping up on Fresh in the past week or so (Pearl Jam, STP).

I think I even heard them play "Come As You Are" byNirvana a couple of weeks ago.

I have heard the now-defunct "Fresh 105.9" in Chicago play "Come As You Are" during its final weeks. Hmmm...

I doubt there'll be a WINS-FM because they don't want to hurt their sister news station WCBS-AM... ditto for WCBS-AM on FM because it'd hurt WINS as well :)

While WWFS only has half the listeners of Lite-FM, it's still consistantly a Top 5 station among Women 25-54 and does pretty well Women 18-49 and Women 18-34. So it will be a long time before CBS were to simulcast one of its AM stations on 102.7. I think 92.3 would flip first. They're not doing as well in the 18-34 race, often finishing out of the Top 5. The gap between them and Z100 is larger than the gap between Fresh and Lite-FM.

CBS has three AM stations in NYC that make a ton of money. Someday some hard decisions will have to be made regarding the future of WFAN, WCBS and WINS on the AM dial. However, WEMP is so bad and so confused in its goals and presentation that it will likely not be a factor in what CBS does with its AM stations. There was a fear the Merlin news stations could be a threat, prompting CBS to put All-News WBBM on Chicago's Fresh station. But in Chicago, WLIT and WCFS both perform so much poorer than WLTW and WWFS do in NYC, it was not as big a move to blow up Chicago's Fresh station for a simulcast of WBBM.

So while NYC's Fresh is not knocking anyone over in the ratings, it is strong enough that CBS will leave it alone for a while. I'd be more worried about WPLJ. It's not Top 5 in 25-54, 18-49 or 18-34. Scott & Todd are not in the Top 10 morning shows, yet earn salaries like they are. The only FM stations WPLJ beats are WEMP and WPAT in the 6+ ratings.
