Fresh vs. Lite: Now It Gets Interesting...

... with the news that former Lite-FM PD Jim Ryan has resurfaced not only as the VP of the AC format for CBS Radio, but he also will get to call the shots for CBS' AC station in New York, Fresh 102.7 - you know, the station trying desperately to compete with Lite-FM?

Jim effectively pulled a Dene Hallam move here. Whether his mere presence at WWFS will help buoy it toward ratings success is anybody's guess.

but REMEMBER, Jim Ryan WAS the PD at WLTW-FM for MANY years - so he DEFINITELY knows his way around AC radio - he's gonna shake things up at Fresh...

Ryan's also going to program Chicago's Fresh (WCFS) from NY--he may get a bye here because there are rumors that Clear Channel is going to flip Chicago's Lite (WLIT) to the La Preciosa format, making him the winner by default. Since the PPMs started, Lite has only been able to get ratings traction during the holidays in Chicago (obviously, it's all-Christmas then). CC is already doing crossplugs on Lite for WKSC, their KISS FM franchise in Chicago (which says that either CHR is softening up or the female demos are sticking with the format and not going to AC when they turn 30 like they used to).

and if and when 'LIT flips to La Preciosa, Ryan is not only the WINNER by default, but Fresh better get ready - Ryan's got the AC track record to back him up....

Ryan is a pro with a great record. His problem was that he worked for Clear Channel. They did to Lite what they did to all of their AC stations in the last 3 years. They canned his talent, forced changes that he surely didn't believe were needed and he left. Unfortunately many of the CC stations that have been gutted still do well either because of past reputation or because there is no real competition. In Los Angeles they've fired many. They've got a programmer over the PD who is a know nothing when it comes to AC and it's not getting better. Ryan probably won't see a lot of success at first, but give him time and he may put a real dent in WLTW's ratings. Good for him!

that's EXACTLY what I'm sayin - but he's probably gonna have a LOT of pressure put on him simply BECAUSE of his track record with Lite...

A reader on DCRTV.com wonders if Ryan will also take the reins at DC's "Fresh" station, but the site moderator thinks it's not in the cards, as DC's "Fresh" ratings are "not so hot." Ummm, okay... are they no better than the Chicago "Fresh" numbers? And since Ryan is going to overlook the entire company's AC format stations, wouldn't he have a little involvement with DC's "Fresh" station by default?

I would be surprised if he DOESN'T end up running things at the Fresh in DC...after all, if he is the "head" of the CBS AC radio cluster....

It goes deeper than just that. This guy just GETS it, like nobody else in AC. Lite-fm was stagnant with a quickly aging audience when he arrived there. He's one of the few, and I mean few programmers who recognize what TODAY'S adult listener is all about. As a CBS AC on-air employee, I am totally stoked about this!

Also had the pleasure of working for Jim when I was a baby DJ. Hope he won't hold that against me. ;-)

i don't think it is, Mike...

(hey, InSearchofGear...Jim Ryan's comin in based ON HIS TRACK RECORD with Lite FM - and gettin ready to take Fresh to the next level....)

His track record at Lite, WBEB, KXYQ, WJXQ.....

This is the same Jim Ryan that was on Fox 5 a long time ago and CBS 2 back in '05?
