Friday 8-18-06 @ 5PM Philly Rocks once again

O

OHara

Guest
Don't want to jolt anyones mind, but I heard from a reliable source, a good friend of mine who works in Baltimore @ HFS. 104.5 will be an Active/Alternative hybred, come this Friday, with concentration on music and promotions, except for the morning show, which will have some music. The morning show will be duplicated from a big city where CC has a Rocker. That is all I know. You can take it or leave it, it may happen or may not, but what this gentleman told me is better than not knowing anything. In these past few days, nothing has been said but some no-nothings (not from this board) claiming Spanish, not gonna happen. I just hope someone from CC does not read this and dump the project, I sure hope they read this and treat it with respect.

Google, I don't Google, that is my past history about Nam, don't believe it, email me, I will show you medals, pictures and provide full proof of my accounts in the war. Your move next, I gave you my email, think I am lying, call my bluff, your move, its your kind that put America in this sad state.

why would someone from a CBS Radio station know ANYTHING about what a CC station is doing ESPECIALLY in another market? Believe me Ohara, I WANT an Active/Alternative Rocker (like CC's DC101) in Philly...but how can we trust what they are saying?

I was fishing, (not trolling), around today, talking to various people and friends I know in radio, trying to get some dope on what is in store for the Philly dial. In fact, I just got off the phone with this contact awile ago, just as long as I don't mention his name on the board, just his place of employment its cool. He just told me that rumors are flying in the DC/MD area about what is going down in Philly. I guess it doesn't matter what company you work with, if news is hot in the business, everyone in the higher echelon knows about it. Don't know if its fact but he is pretty reliable and has a good position, so I would trust him. The only fly in the ointment would be if his sources are just blowing smoke or if CC will change their minds at the last minute. That is, if too many hands get into the mix and they panic and go the other way. I just wanted to relay what I heard. Believe me, I too want some Rock product on 104.5. I think the only station going to prosper and gain from all of this, listener wise, is WOGL, sad to say.

I don't know. Maybe with most companies that is true, but in radio, they don't want the other companies to know now. If they all knew, CC could promote it. CC doesn't care if the general public knows whats going to be on 104.5, or if the people on these boards. They care about GM, CBS, ect, because it is them that could try and beat CC to the punch.

I was talking to someone last night who worked for 104.5 when it was star 104.5.he does not work for cc.any more but he has lots of friends still at cc.and he told me it will not be rock!!he dont know what it will be but rock is off the table!!!every one thinks talk

Does anyone really think that the suits at ClearChannel woke up one day and said "We're tired of the programming on WSNI. Sure, they are doing fairly well in the ratings (better than they did as Alice, I believe), but we want to change it. We don't know what we want to change it to, yet, so lets just shut it down, simulcast another station as long as the FCC lets us, and then we'll flip a coin. And once we make up our minds as to the new format, we don't care if we have already signed a whole slate of jocks to contracts, if anyone finds out what that format is, we'll fire the lot of 'em before they even get on the air, flip formats before this one even starts, and start the whole process again"?

I am SURE that CC has done/is doing the following:

1) Decided before shutting down Sunny as to what the new format will be
2) Whatever it is, it will be drastically different. So they are simulcasting their new format on WJJZ in the hopes that some of the Sunny audience will move there instead of to the competitors
3) Planting conflicting rumors just to keep the competitors guessing
4) They have already decided WHEN they are going to the new format. Again, they want to keep the competition guessing.

I checked with my buddie again and he reinforced what he heard. Like I said, it may not be so, but he heard what he heard. He did say not too many people are talking about anything positive, but Rock was the format of choice. I cannot understand the big secret, even if a competitor knew what 104.5 was going to do, they probably would not take it on first. They would probably let 104.5 fly with it before they changed one of their properties and maybe mess up. I am hearing Hurban, what the hell is that, some Spanish Rap/Hip Hop, like we really need another Rapper, now in a foreign language. If they do flip to that, they will be making a big error and fail miserably, unless they sell it combo wise. I guess CC wants to be the king of Urban Radio in Philly, I will really miss the Christmas music on the old Sunny, no other station can compete with the blend they had.....so long Christmas music, the other stations cannot compare. I am still hoping for Rock, maybe something positive will come out of this. I would laugh if they went Oldies, to take some of OGL's audiance, but do it the right way, open up the playlist, then, they could still do the Christmas thing, but the demos, too old like me.

1. Ofcoarse
2. Yep, but that doesn't tell you much, other than it won't be a format targeting women.
3. Very true. The big ones have been country, talk, spanish, and alternative. Makes you wonder, if they're planting these rumors, would they plant the real format as one of the rumors?
4. Probably ture, but depending on the format, they may be havning some problem that could delay them. I'm guessing Thursday, at noon. That would be a full week of previewing Philly's 106.1

OHara, stations often flip their format based on what they hear another station is doing. There's a saying, the first station to flip wins. When WCAU-FM 98.1 heard wioq 102.1 was planing to beat them to the flip towards oldies, 98.1 went oldies right away. Look who won?

More recently, (and this should tell you why CC would want to protect the format to be on 104.5) 104.5 was gonna flip to "Jammin' Gold". Word leaked, and GM's 95.7 flipped to the format first. 104.5 ended up going on to becomming Alice 104.5 a few weeks later.

I'll also miss the Christmas music also on Sunny. It was much better than the holiday music on B101. Granted, they played a lot of the same songs, but I preferred Sunny's collection.

I would prefer rock, but you can't rule out Spanish.
