Friday evening's Channel 8 News

I realize that this is a Radio board, but at least I did work upstairs from
Channel 8 at NewsTalk 57 in the late 1970s.

I couldn't get over the lead story on the 6pm broadcast of the Channel 8 News Friday night.

It was a story of a handicapped man in Dallas who had been punched in the nose by a crazed neighbor at his apartment complex.

Essentially, the handicapped man had been in his wheelchair on his apartment doorstep. He said good morning to his neighbor, who then sucker punched him in the nose.

They even went live to a Channel 8 reporter at the scene. A police photograph was shown of the man's bruised nose, as was an interview of him saying, "It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair. It was a sucker punch."

A punch in the nose seemed like such a trivial story to be the lead for the 6pm newscast.

Channel 8 News is not as good as it used to be. Meanwhile, the news on CBS-11 and NBC-5 is much better than it used to be.

Everything is BREAKING NEWS...

They say that phrase on WFAA like a teenager says you know. The standing positions of the news people now. They always used to sit...now they stand and all those cozy scenes together...ENOUGH ALREADY!

I can just hear the bells, the teletype, the whistles in a KLIF 20/20 newscast and a deep booming voice...

"MAN SMITE BY NEIGHBOR AFTER EXCHANGING A FRIENDLY GOOD MORNING... SIXTY THREE DEGREES AT 8:00 IN DALLAS..."

You gotta admit listening to those old newscasts, there was a lot of showmanship on the coverage of the latest fender bender or housefire. But by golly they covered everything.

But yes... an assault on the handicapped is not exactly news... had he pushed him down the stairs and he broke his neck... I can see a mention. But they went a little overboard on that story.

Re: Everything is BREAKING NEWS...

That Jackie Hyland acts like every grass fire is the fiery furnace. Really annoying. Justin Farmer is just cute; too cute. He needs to be on a soap opera. Greg Fields is nice and Alexa; she needs rhinoplasty.

Re: Everything is BREAKING NEWS...

I usually try not to say anything negative about the competition, but this week Michael Rey was let go. Not only is Michael a former radio guy who did superb traffic and Cowboys sideline reports, he turned into a solid anchor/reporter. And I'm guessing he knew that last week's DART light rail accident in downtown Dallas wasn't at the corner of Olive and BYRON.

Looks like Metro will hire another former reporter. Of course there is WB33,

There are other markets...

in Texas where I am seeing former anchors. I see that Tim Heller is at a station in Houston, and Scott Chesner is now at a station in Tyler.

I can't believe Michael Rey was let go. Not only was he great on traffic; he was a solid anchor and had an added maturity to him than still-in-the-fraternity Justin Farmer.

So can someone tell me what Scott Sams is doing?

Every now and then he pops up on KWRD-FM guest hosting a talk show. Thatis what he wants to do.
