Friday trip to Tyler and Bill Coates on the radio

Headed east on 20 to Tyler for the Highland Park-Kilgore game Friday afternoon. Tuning around I stumbled on KTBB-600 with a 3A playoff game, Chapel Hill vs. Pleasant Grove. I had no idea who the two schools were or what part of east Texas they were from. I kept listening because doing the call, the one and only Bill Coates.

There are a lot of guys who call high school football and do a pretty good job. But I doubt there's anyone who does it better than Bill. True greatness!

Chapel Hill would be in Tyler, and Pleasant Grove is a Texarkana school, according to some High School playoff schedules I googled.

Coates is very good. He was super w/ TCU on WBAP & Host back when they had the entire Southwest Conference. Another -SUPERRB- play by play guy is KBTX-TV GM Mike Wright. He could easily go from Bryan, Texas to the big time if he was discovered by the right bunch.

Bill's a super nice guy, too. And, he never forgets a face. I hadn't seen him in about eight years, and I was in Hastings on Broadway in Tyler, last year and he recognized me right away and we chatted for a bit. John Sims and Barry Davis are also first class guys. KTBB and KDOK has outstanding talent for that market (which used to have more than it's fair share of great talent. Thank you Clear Channel, Gap, Access-1, Waller and the rest of you penny pinchers).
