Fridays, SCTV, Bizarre, Not Necessarily The News

Reruns of Saturday Night Live have been on the air for years on such channels like Comedy Central, E !!, even Nick@Nite but the other shows that are similar such as Fridays and SCTV haven't. Wonder why?

I know SCTV is out on DVD but I am surprised Fridays isn't. Same with Bizarre and Not Necessarily The News. Does HBO and Showtime still own the rights to the latter two? I heard Canada's CBC owns the rights to SCTV, if that is correct does that include the Cinemax/NBC versions? I seem to remember reading years back that SCTV by the time it aired on Cinemax. the show was no longer airing in Canada.

Fridays, maybe this is a myth but I had a co-worker once told me that in the case of Fridays, the show's rights was bought by none other than SNL's Lorne Michaels in an effort to mothball the show. At the time when Fridays aired on ABC, I thought the case/crew of SNL actually looked down at Fridays.

SCTV airs on Canada's Comedy Network weekdays at 6:30 AM, but that's no good if you don't have a Canadian cable/satellite hookup. Bizarre used to be on the same channel a few years back, but is nowhere to be found. It is surprising since CTV produced that program and they own Comedy Network.
______________
From WNBC-TV New York this is Liiiiive at Fiiiiive!

SCTV (best comedy show ever!)aired sporadically at midnight on Fridays a while back but more than likely you'll have to find the DVD. I had read that the actors on the show owned the rights to the charachters they played so clearing the rights were no easy task..and that probably would be the case for future TV airings.

I don;t know much about the Fridays situation..but with its emphasis on drug humor it probably wuldn't be on TV anymore.
______________

TV Land was airing SCTV (the half-hour syndicated version) on Friday nights, but I don't think it's on anymore.

Both Fridays and a "clean" version of Bizarre aired in syndication in the mid-80s.

The syndicated version of SCTV has been hacked to death in part due to rights fees for the characters and the music. They had some of the best performances ever (John Cougar Mellencamp, Dave Edmunds, The Tubes). Sadly money talks and singers are silent.

Its another reason why reruns of WKRP are downright unwatchable...all the music is generic.
