Friendly FCC Man Visits WGTM.

What a shame...These clowns give radio a bad name...Another sad day for a once great station..A great example of non radio people running a radio station into the ground

This is just another example of the government harassing religious broadcasters trying to spread "the good news" as they break every rule in the book and squeeze every dollar out of the facility. On a more serious note, I see that part of the fine is due to not having the proper fencing around the tower bases and this is a very serious safety issue. I would think they could also be fined by the local government agencies, county, state, and city (if they're in the city limits) and OSHA too. This is one of those instances where it would almost be a blessing if copper thieves came in and took what ever they could steal (just kidding).

Spirit Broadcasting hasn't paid property taxes on the property in Rock Ridge in a while, either. So you might be able to get the whole thing at auction before you know it! - Minus the all-too-important license :(

You know it really is a shame that so many broadcasters over the years have used the Lord to do such bad radio..I mean that seriously..I don't not question anyone's faith but it just seems that so many over the years seem to feel exempt from any broadcast professionalism or ethics..There have only been a handful over the years that have had a good presentation..The majority have been so bad its sad and comical at the same time...

I did some production for them when I was at Barton College, but I had to draw the line when they handed me a FIFTEEN MINUTE script (more or less, an infomercial) for a palm reader on this "Christian" radio station. They actually had a great signal then, but the place was a death trap then (roughly 1992-93).

Allen, Ditto! You would think if you really believe you are representing the Creator of the Universe, you would attempt to have the best possible facility possible, at least from a technical perspective, but unfortunately these people who end up with a license have no concept of what they are doing. They appear to think they do not have to follow the rules and regulations because they have a higher calling. I've always wondered if you're operating illegally i.e. overpower, over-modulation, etc., what are you disregarding in other areas of your life that you should be doing properly. Just adding my two mites (cents) to the conversation.

WGTM if it was up to snuff tech wise has a killer signal..I know the radio biz can be tough but it really is sad to remember what the station once was and realizing what it has become but that can be said about alot of stations...Bad radio is a choice made by those who either don't know what a good station is or those who think it is more important to save a nickel on the front end instead of spending the money to keep it live, local and technically sound which will give you the ability to make money down the road..Yes the economy has been a big issue over the last few years but there was a lot of bad, cheaply done radio in pretty good economic times...With that said there is some very good radio being done with very little resources..The little things mean so much to the sound of a station..Those little things in most cases don't cost much.. if anything....and its pretty easy to tell who does those little things and who doesn't...It should not matter whether its a 500 watt daytimer or a 100,000 watt flamethrower.Take pride in your product...Can I get an amen!!!!!!

The RF burn might not kill you, but flying a plane into 4 unlit towers a few miles from an industrial airport might just do you in. I noticed that the FCC didn't mention that lighting violation in the report. To me, that seems like the biggest safety issue at 'GTM.

To pay the fine, Spirit will have to mortgage the land.
But that might have already happened.

I smell silence, or Class D 250watts, in the cards for the once Mighty Five-90.

FAA will be knocking on their door too.

FAA lets the FCC do the enforcement when it comes to lights on towers with FCC licensed facilities on them.
One little call and some field office may find it a priority to check it out.

But it would be a good idea to call the FAA NOTAM people so pilots will know about the situation.
