"Friends" Forever

How is it possible to air Friends in true HD when the original series was aired at a 4:3 ratio when NBC had Friends?

Depends on how the show was shot. AVS Forum has a discussion ongoing, with screenshots from the Australian and German HD broadcasts.

Same way "Seinfeld" also airs in true HD; Warner Bros. planned in advance for HD to eventually hit mainstream, so everything was framed for 16:9 and the film masters were kept on hand.

The third cycle of the sitcom "Friends" has now been cleared in most of the U.S. The cycle begins December 2013 and ends in 2017. The show will also begin airing in "true HD".

So do we have to wait till 2014 to see Friends in HD or will they move the HD copies into syndication ASAP? It seems silly to run the show in SD for 16 months when other countries are seeing it in HD now.

Anything ever filmed can be shown in HD, even movies from 100 years ago. 35mm film was meant to be projected onto large screens, and the resolution is excellent. All that has to be done is an HD rescan from a good quality print. Aspect ratio is irrelevant as anything 4:3 (all pre-1953 movies fall into this category) can be sidepaneled.

I've liked Jennifer Aniston in all her movies, but I've never seen an episode of this show.

Over the weekend I saw "Rock Star". She was good in that.
