fringe or Distant stations?

Wanting to know if anybody listens to fringe or distant stations?
If so, what do you guys like?
For me WVLT for the Oldies, WGLS (which I just rediscovered), I also like WAYV in the mornings, WSJO, WRFY, WAEB and WODE and WZZO too, along with WMGM. Its hard to pick a favorite honestly.
But the one I like most (simply because the format is hard to find) is WVLT.

I live in the Lehigh Valley and listen to 979X WBSX out of Scranton. It comes in better than WMMR in most locations. I also enjoy Pocono 96.7 WABT out of Stroudsburg. They're a 60s/70s/80s classic hits station like WOGL was before Entercom ruined it.

When I'm not listening to the 29,000 Watt flamethrower from the top of One Liberty Place, I listen to WBZ-FM. I stream it. I'm originally from Boston so, I like to listen to it on the app instead of WIP-FM or WPEN-FM. I also listen to Sirius-XM the Pulse, Hits 1 and Howard 100. Those stations come in from very far away beamed in from an orbit above the equator originating from either NYC or DC.

Yeah you know, I don't like the new direction myself. Nor do I like the new jingles/imaging/on-air processing for that matter. Harvy Holiday's Street Corner Sunday was the last Divested for me. The last remaining part of WOGL that I liked. gone. They removed Elvis and Friends. They removed Rockin Ron Cade overnights. Don Cannon Died I know, Mike ST. John's All Request Lunch. Charley Benet, I know Hi Lit died. Christy Springfield Playing '50s Oldies overnight. When Bob Charger was there in the night time, you never knew what Theme in music he'd bring to the table at 9 PM before they started doing just countdowns. Now Having said that when Angela Mason was on Saturday's there was personality there. but CBS sold WOGL and to me it hasn't been the same since.

To me, they're already not Oldies (yes I know the '80s was a long time ago now.)
To me Oldies is more along the lines of what WVLT plays.
That's why its called classic hits for WOGL and not Oldies I expect.
Yes I know time marches on. Yes I know 50's-60's oldies is "Too old" for advertisers. but its the music I grew up with as Oldies and you cannot find it on the radio anymore. Makes me sad. yes I love CHR and like classic hits too but the oldies being gone just sucks.

“Radio” isn’t just AM/FM. Part of time marching on (WOGL is playing songs older than they did when they signed on as Oldies 98) is migration of special interest formats elsewhere. Satellite and streaming services.

Huh? I don't get it. That bit about WOGL playing songs older than they were when they started that's the part that confused me. I know streaming services and the like fill the format holes. Not just Spotify or Satellite, but shoutcast, Live365, AccuRadio, etc. But you see, I like the personality that Am/FM can have, which just isn't the same if you voicetrack it, or if you just play a music jukebox.
But even that has changed now probably because its cheaper to VT, and now you are not limited to the bar, you have social media all over the place.
What can I say, I've always liked Am/FM.

Isn't WOGL also playing songs newer than 1987, when they changed formats from Hot-Hits, WCAU-FM?

Yeah there's 90s and even an occasional 2k track thrown in. Someone previously brought up "Family Affair" by Mary J Blige. I think I heard Santana's "Smooth" once when checking in on it. Not to get off topic but I feel like Ben does the 80s/90s better than them - even without DJs!

Back on the topic - WAVT T-102 Pottsville is a really interesting station. I'll hear new songs, throwbacks, 90s, 80s, even 70s! It's crazy to hear Bay City Roller's "Saturday Night" between new songs. I think they're an example of how cool local radio can be in smaller towns. Not sure how well it would work in a city.

I've found that stations in small towns and rural areas tend to have playlists that I enjoy much better than the seemingly homogenized stuff that has to pass muster in larger markets. I also like the occasionally corny commercials and on-the-cheap production quality. Of course, those stations don't make much money but there's always a trade-off!

I call WAVT and WRFY train wrecks lol.

WAVT moreso than WRFY.

WRFY when it was that Hot AC/Classic Hits/Classic Rock mashup, it was to keep 107.5 Frank FM from gaining any ground. When Frank departed, it shifted back to mainly Hot AC, and has kept in the Hot AC/AC lane for a while. The newer music is a bit more aggressive like Hot AC, but spin totals (their #1 song only gets 32 spins per week) is more ACish.

Well WAVT doesn't really have anything else in that area, do they? so they need to try to please everybody. Sounds like a station I'd really like and never checked out before!
For a while WRFY and WZZO were both doing classic rock along with WODE and i was like come on guys. seriously?
That's a lot of classic rock for one area.

T-102 indeed plays most anything. If they took ratings for Schuylkill County, or whatever they would wanna call it ..... Pottsville PA ..... Pottsville-Shenandoah ..... The Land Time Forgot ..... WAVT would get at least a 20 share. Possibly a 30.
Their stick is about 5 air miles north of me so they come in fairly well : -) I'm about halfway between their stick and their city of license -- Pottsville. T-102 is really the only game in town, and with that huge signal they make adjacent books, although with .4's and .6's; see, a lot of the surrounding markets have stations that serve their audiences with niches of T-102's playlist and approach. Those stations divide up the T-102 spectrum into Classic Hits, 70's, modern A/C, and other specialized formats.

One exception you might wanna try out, tvK5 and Miguelito, is Hanna 92.3. They're licensed to Riverside, across the river from Danville PA.

This station, imaged as 'The Susquehanna's Greatest Hits' are, at once, a car-radio button here, a stream listen, and my favourite way -- the tune-to station on an FM portable on the porch. One day I heard them play a set that had both Bad Company and the Sunshine Company! Give 'em a try.

I used to listen to Hanna on 80 when traveling to State College. They're very similar to the other Seven Mountain Media Classic Hits stations. In fact, they even "updated" WOWY 97.1 in State College. Two years prior WOWY was strictly 60s/70s oldies. They all still play a good variety of music.
