froggy 101 "the doc show"

I was in nepa yesterday and today. This am got a chance to listen to the above. Great talent!!! The whole crew interacts well and relates to their audience well!!! Hat's off to Doc Selena and the cast. PS: His handle cracks me up Doc Medek. That's too funny. I wish we had a fun morning team to listen to in harrisburg pa.

He's been using "Doc Medek" forever. Medek is his real last name.

I remember when he was PD at KRZ in the early 90's and everyone at the station (except for one jock - Bob Loftus) had to switch to a "novelty" name. Mike Moore became "Joe Mama." Ken Medek became "Doc." It was pretty funny.

Of course, most of us already had novelty names ... Mary Krismas, Hollywood Haze, Spyder McGuire (that was me), Anita Life, Justin Time...

Loftus argued that he had made a name for himself without a "novelty name," so he should be entitled to keep using his real name. Management was pretty high on him, so he had stroke, and therefore got what he wanted. In hindsight, he had shed a novelty name (they had called him the "baby DJ" since he was 14 or 15 when he had started at KRZ), so he probably didn't want another one.

Last I knew Bob was doing weekend stuff at Magic 93 and DJ-ing on the weekends, but that was a few years ago. No idea what he's up to now. He had a smooth voice, though.

Bob Loftus is now working in Sales at WNEP. You can still here his smooth voice on some commercials and he actually has his mug on a few of them. Bob has a great voice and is a great guy too.

We had some funky names at KRZ: Ken Garoo, Hollywood Haze, Mary Krismas, Sonny Day, Joe Momma...

The full timers got off pretty easy at the time. Jerry Padden used "The Big Guy," Walker (of course) used "Jumpin' Jeff," Rocky and Sue kept their names, and Medek started using "Doc."

Ah, memories...

He always was a great guy. One of the nicest, most level headed folks I knew in the biz. I remember that when we worked together, he went to NYC on a trip and stopped into Z-100 for a tour. They had him do a few audition breaks and the PD said he would hire Bob "in a heartbeat." Bob never let that go to his head, though. He told us about it and left it alone. It was rare for someone to have major market talent and not act like a primma donna, but that was Bob.

Glad to know he's doing well these days...

As a KRZ listener from the very early days (I was 7 when they hit the air here), I miss the "novelty name" days. I am old enough to miss "Jumpin'" Jeff in the mornings. I still curse out KRZ for making that change!

My favorite novelties were Mary Krismas and Joe Mama. I remember people calling into "Mary" and asking if it was her real name quite often. I have to give credit to "Joe Mama" for his patience with a bunch of silly college freshman back in the day. When I was a college freshman at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, I introduced my out of town college suite-mates to my favorite station (the stations in that area just didn't compare!). We used to call up Joe Mama late and start riffing on the Joe Mama thing. We would then giggle at him until we had tears running down our faces. He never hung up on us, always let us play our silly games. Nice guy, good times!

I worked with the Baby DJ (Bob) when he was an intern at an accounting firm in WB in 1995. Always was a nice guy to me, some others thought he had a big ego. I think those others didn't want to like him in the first place because he was somewhat of a celebrity in the office and with the higher ups. Glad to hear he is still hanging around the area, I wish him much luck.

Doc Medek left KRZ for the PDS job at WBLI 106.1 on LI and that was when they hired Tony Banks. Tony Banks is now on WAOA 107.1 WA1A. Doc Medek came back when Rocky and Sue left KRZ and did mornings for one year and returned. That is when Doc Medek became the morning show host on Froggy 101.

The thing about the Doc Show is, it's not a "country" radio show. They're on a country station but you could take that show as-is, put it on any radio station and it would do well.
