Froggy 94

Froggy 94 may not have been as good as Kix 106, but it had huge ratings. Entercom made a mistake by killing off Froggy. Does anyone agree?

94.1 MHz hasn't been successful since they flipped to 94.1 The Buzz and now 94.1 KQK...

Biggest mistake Entercom ever made.

Froggy was a joke. It never got any decent numbers and never made any money. When I worked in Memphis I always thought it would have been the most demeaning thing in the world to work on the radio and have to call my self "Polywog" or "Lilly Pad" or whatever the hell other stupid name they came up with.

The folks at Entercom would disagree with your premise that 'KQK is unsuccessful. From what I have heard, they are generally pleased.

Plus? Karen Perrin. Bonus.

If I had to pick a Memphis station that I actually miss, it would be KQK. It was the station I listened to most when I was visiting the city. As an outsider to the business, I always felt like their commercial breaks are structured differently. It was easier to tolerate. Is that just perception or are they doing a different kind of clock than is normal?

Plus when I did hear something I didn't like, the comedy channel on the HD-2 was a good time killer.

Huge ratings? Not. I can't speak for the mid-90s when Sinclair owned it, but I'll bring up a point that I brought up years ago about Froggy. The ONLY reason that station existed was to prop up WRVR. When Sinclair launched the station, it was simply to counter Kix 106 to keep Kix from stealing WRVR's demo numbers. Froggy 94 was there to keep the AC numbers in-house. WRVR was the cash cow.

That said, Froggy was a warm station and while the ratings did NOT reflect actual listenership (we always suspected that Kix got the credit in diaries), the station's popularity can't be denied. We didn't answer the phones for two weeks after the format change to The Buzz because they rang off the hook with listeners wanting to know where their station went. I'm not sure that happened after the other fly-by-night formats, but perhaps would if they blew up KQK with Karen Perrin & Co.

But lets be clear, Froggy 94 NEVER got HUGE ratings. I think at one point, the station got close to a tie with Kix during one of those books that the diaries were all sent to South Memphis (or Frayser maybe?...), but Greg Mozingo's genius always kept them one step ahead of the Frog. And that's not the fault of any Programmer who ran WOGY, just the inferior signal and the Frog-isms that the station was saddled with. I think if they'd dumped the "Froggy" isms as early as '96 and perhaps just gone to something like Wild Country Y94, they could have salvaged the Country format, but... and this is something I've always said... Entercom is NOT a Country company, at least it wasn't in 2000. They did NOT do the format, except in Wilkes-Barry PA. So when Entercom purchased the Frog and WRVR from Sinclair, Country on 94.1 was doomed. Back then, their big, new format was The Buzz.

Getting off subject a bit, some might remember that the original plan for The Buzz was not what it turned out to be. The Buzz was supposed to be a clone of their Kansas City Buzz station, which was an all-80s format. Can you imagine what would have happened had that gone on the air? In 2001?

Thanks for the Froggy Memories!

In the places Froggy could be heard as well as Kix ( the parking lot and south a bit), it always gave Kix a run for their money. Not bad for an upstart "theme" station VS. heritage Kix 106.
Besides I happen to recall a book or two where "afternoons" DID better than KIX!!!

And for anyone interested..they made the checks out to ME, so it didn't really matter what name I used on the radio! Do you use your real name?
If anyone (where there IS anyone) live on the air these days uses their real name...that's not pride-that's stupidity! It was one thing in the late 70's or early 80's...(and then most who used their real name were on an ego trip anyway) but something else altogether now.

I hardly think that the little rush an egomaniac might get from people recognizing their real name over the loudspeaker at Chili's is worth the exposure to "whackoes and criminals" these days.
But, hey! Whatever rocks your boat, Radio Star! Lol!!

;D

I always used my real name, too, but the stations that I worked for were so small (or in small towns) that everyone would have already known me anyway, thus making the use of a pseudonym a waste of time.

If I had ever gone on to a larger market, I definitely would have used an assumed name.

Whatever, AlliGator at Froggy 104 in Jackson was great! And she could give a flip if she didn't use her real name
