Gotta give a hand to the folks who make Froggy 98 work. Another clear win in SC to go along with their 987th straight victory in Altoona. Speaking of Tunatown, how 'bout WRTA? With a dozen shares is the Mighty 1240 the highest rated killawatt AM station in America? Wow!!!

So even with the CHR format no one gives a crap about WGMR still. If they would do country and do it right they possibly triple their gutter ratings of current. I don't get it. I'm not in State College anymore and haven't been up there in years, but does WJHT sounds that much better than WGMR? Someone explain to me how this 50,000 watt stick is consistently one of the lowest rated FM's on the dial. Thank you

WGMR looks like a huge success compared to 105.9. They dumped lots of money into new studios and equipment, a 90k/yr morning show, and the booster to increase downtown signal, and they don't manage to get even one point. This is probably something for a different thread, but sooner or later, somebody is going to have to make a decision about whether to continue to dump money into the thing or just cut their losses.

I 100% agree on your evaluation of 105.9. You're correct, that is an entire mess for a different thread. I was looking at WGMR comparing them to the market best, not the worst. Isn't it better to compare yourself to success, not failure?

There is more to the story

If you really want to figure this out, you need to look at the owners of WGMR, the other stations that they own, and how they operate. The bottom line is, if they are happy with the cash flow they do, and they do make money, then its their call on what they do with the station. I dont really think the numbers are a big issue, if the cash flow is there. And as everyone knows, in Pennsyltucky, you don't need big numbers in radio, to make big money.

Re: There is more to the story

trust me, there's NOT big money in State College even if you have numbers, unless you happen to own the CDT

Big money in SC

Forever does pretty well. Though part of the story in the Fall book is the crash & burn of Hot, Lite & RSC. Granted, having WMAJ whip G-101 must have brought a smile to their faces, but they can't be happy with the rest. All that aside, though, don'tcha figure that Forever is making a very nice profit in State College--ratings or no ratings?

Re: Big money in SC

In the last three years, national and regional business is down about 60% and local rates have not increased, the market has not grown as expected and by the time you pay bank notes, salaries and shell out promotional dollars…you’re just as well off sticking the money in a bank and getting the interest, unless you just love the aggravation. There’s a reason Clear Channel has gotten out of small markets like Johnstown…it’s far from a printing press.
