FROM A CUB TO A CAT

New Cat Country morning personality has been announced: Tim Lynah leaves Cub Country (KUUB) Reno & starts on WCTK's morning show on 7/21. He'll use his real name Tim Leary, is a native New Englander, & has worked in Boston. He also does stand up comedy so this should be interesting. So the deal is done & hopefully with Kevin Lawrence settled in for afternoon drive, Jessica & Sam holding down the fort middays, & Adam Scott the bright spot in Providence nighttime radio, it means some much needed stability at WCTK for a long time. And I assume they're still live all night with Bob Maddox. I've been waking up to Glory who's doing a great job & am wondering if she'll be staying on as a 2-person show.

This is what more stations should do. Instead of hiring DJ's who "TRY" to be funny. How about hiring comedians who are "ACTUALLY" funny! This makes perfect sense to me. Sounds like WCTK made a smart move.

Absolutely wrong - as usual Skynet. Comedians on radio rarely work out. I'm not saying Leary won't. I'll absolutely give him a 100% fair shot! I'm psyched to have something interesting in the market.

As a general rule - stand up comedy funny doesn't translate to radio funny. Everyone thinks because they're funny on TV or in a club that they can be funny on radio. Not that same. There is a certain percentage of being a jock that requires humor, but lots of it requires timing, knowing when to move on, when to go to spots, and when to STFU.

The female demo is not listening to CTK in the AM to hear a stand up act of "ever notice how_____" jokes. Not how it works at all. They want info, news, weather, mixed in with Kenny, Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw etc. Leary would probably work better as a sidekick to a straightman (or woman) who can "jock" the show while he makes jokes and does characters.

Oh really? Name all the comedians that you know of who didn't work out? I'll be waiting for that extensive list.

Before this turns into John against the world, it's probably a moot point since the guy has a radio background in addition to doing stand-up comedy so he's aware of all the elements that go into a morning show besides humor. Forget about naming comics who did or didn't work out in radio. It doesn't matter. Hiring someone with no radio experience based on his talents as a comedian, actor, musician, politician (strike that one), etc means you're hiring someone who has to be taught the basics of radio. I seriously doubt Tim's show will even be allowed to be a 4 hour comedy routine but the fact that he does comedy probably means he knows how to use it on the air.

One comedian who didn't work on radio... two words - Steve Sweeney. There's a start.

I LOVE Bob Maddox!! I listen to him on the way home on Saturday nights....I love his timing, his delivery, his compelling corniness. "It's Saturday night, date night...." Go Madman!

I was briefly an intern at WZLX when Sweeney was there. When he was on the air, no one in the studio could move. You actually had to hold still. I found it hard to stand still because I was supposed to be doing stuff, and he yelled at me a couple of times, right on the air. Not by name; he didn't know my name. On the other hand, when he sent me out for his coffee, he always gave me a $20 and said get whatever you want for yourself, too.

Whoopi Goldberg...and she had one of the best CHR jocks in all of radio, Paul "Cubby" Bryant, as her co-host!

Just because someone is funny, it doesn't mean they'll be great on the radio. And just because someone is great on the radio, it doesn't mean they are funny!?! That being said, I've nothing but good things about Tim AND I 've heard he is funny!!

You can only name one guy..... and to you that means that most comedians are bad for radio? Interesting thought process.

Do you realize that CBS Radio was going to replace Howard Stern with Chris Rock. So if I'm wrong than I guess CBS was just as silly as I am for even considering it. Chris turned down the job... so I guess that neither one of us have to worry about it. I'm just making a point.

However..... let's look at the comedians who had some success in radio. JOAN RIVERS. 6 years on WOR. JAMIE FOX, Curently on Sirius Radio. DENNIS MILLER currently syndicated on 174 stations via Westwood One. STEVE HARVEY who hosts a morning show syndicated nationwide by Premiere Radio Networks. ADAM CAROLLA successful morning host at KLSX Los Angeles.

hmmm... should I go on? I think my point has been made. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to operate a format clock and push a few buttons. About two days of training is needed. But according to you, comedians on Radio rarely work. Interesting. You wouldn't even be able to get a programming job at a radio station in Lowell Massachusetts with that line of thinking.

CBS was gonig to have Chris Rock take over for Stern? Well that never happened, so there goes that point. CBS also flipped a bunch of rock stations to "Free FM" after Stern - that didn't work. I think only KLSX is left. So let's not look to CBS for genius ideas.

Jamie Foxx on Sirius??? You have got to be kidding me! Poll 100 people on the street and 1 of them might know that Jamie Foxx has a show. I have Sirius and I've never heard it. I won't even get into the debate of whether or not he's funny.

Adam Carolla has a succesful morning show on KLSX? The 12+ numbers that came out yesterday on R&R show that KLSX is 25th phase 1 Spring book. That doesn't sound too succesful to me.

Dennis Miller on 174 Westwood One stations? 10a-1p, good I guess. I checked the affiliate list and most of them seem to be B.S. stations. And it appears to be a political show - not a comedy show. Tomorrow he's having a senator from Cali and Ann Coulter on. Doesn't sound too funny to me.

Joan Rivers - old news. Radio has changed my friend.

So yeah, if CTK was going to get Jamie Foxx, Carolla, Joan Rivers and Dennis Miller to do a show - there's a chance it could be funny.

Doesn't take a brain surgeon to push a few buttons??? Last time I checked you don't do it. Why don't you go back to doing your voiceovers in your parents' basement and let those of us who actually work in commercial radio handle it. We appreciate your imput though... no really we do!

Well my parents are dead. So it looks like there is yet another thing you are clueless about. I love people that take cheap shots who end up looking like fools in the end. I gave you good examples and made a good point that was on topic. You gave me one lame name comedian that I have never heard of and you attempted to insult me on top of it. Why don't you tell everybody your name and station? That way everyone else can have a good laugh too.

Steve Sweeney did mornings on ZLX in Boston. Thought you'd know that - radio expert that you are.

It's not that a comedian can't be a good host, it's the right comedian that would be successful...there are examples on both sides....Jay Thomas has been doing radio longer than he has been acting/comedy, Jim Breuer had an excellent show on Sirius (don't know if he still does) and going back to the golden age of radio-Abbott & Costello, Burns & Allen, The Marx Brothers, etc all were on radio....

In Oxford Street's defense, there have been some more recent examples locally that didn't work out so well, Mr Sweeney did jump to mind initially, another is Joe Hebert (when he wasn't associated w/ Mike Butts) is another and while he did it for a little while, Frank O'Donnell on Kix 106 never had huge ratings. There have been some nationally-Whoopi for one, who have not been able to grab the audience.

I also think a distinction has to be made between those doing a music show and a talk show (ala Dennis Miller & Al Franken) because there are different standards. I agree with both sides on this one, being a comedian does not immediately mean success or failure; but you have to be able to do different things than just do comedy and be able to relate to and engage callers/listeners than just do comedy to the audience.....my 2 cents

Back to the original topic, I have heard Leary on KUUB. It is an excellent station with great music and good jocks. He did a nice job. I expect similar when he arrives at WCTK.

The devil just called....it's 32 degrees you know where! :)

;D ;D ;D ... Hey I'm a reasonable person when I hear a voice of reason. I have a friend who thinks I should always agree with him no matter what he says (simply because I'm his friend). But when bulls**t leaves his mouth I certainly don't agree with him. This pisses him off. But I always tell him that I will never agree simply because I'm his friend. I will only agree if what he says actually makes sense!

This time you made sense. Congratulations! ;)
