A couple of items about possible changes in the Chattanooga area (July 20th):

BAHAKEL Adult Standards WDOD-A/CHATTANOOGA may be flipping formats soon, reports THE CHATTANOOGAN, but GM GARY DOWNS won't say what the potential new format might be.

"Right now we are playing Music Of Your Life," DOWNS told the website. "I can't say that will be the case a month from now." DOWNS indicated that longtime morning host EARL FREUDENBERG will likely stay in mornings after a format change; the website speculates that WDOD could flip to Liberal Talk using AIR AMERICA RADIO.

BREWER BROADCASTING Hot AC WALV(ALIVE 95)/CHATTANOOGA-CLEVELAND, TN morning team MIKE LEE and ED RAMSEY are exiting the station after a 7 year run to join crosshall sister Oldies WDNT, effective MONDAY(7/25). Look for WALV to announce their new morning show plans on FRIDAY(7/22) at 7a.

MIKE and ED also hinted that WDNT is poised to flip formats upon their arrival MONDAY, so stay tuned.

From All Access Net News(Part 2)...

A couple more items about possible changes in the Chattanooga area (July 22nd):

BREWER BROACASTING Hot AC WALV(ALIVE 95)/CHATTANOOGA, TN morning team MIKE & ED today abdicated their wake-up crown to former afternoon team DUANE SHANNON and ABBY SUMMERS.

As previously reported, MIKE & ED are headed to crosshall sister Oldies WDNT to, in their words, "blow up the format." The demolition processhas already begun, as the duo are currently playing TOBY KEITH's "How Do You Like Me Now" on a loop at WDNT until their debut on MONDAY(7/25) morning. Interestingly enough, ED was spotted buying a ten gallon hat this afternoon.

Now, across town, CITADEL Oldies WOGT(GT 108) has parted ways with evening host and cluster webmaster GARY POOLE. Evenings will be voicetracked, while middayer SUSIE Q will tackle webmaster duties.

Air America... in CHATTANOOGA???

Uh, I realize that talk radio of a particular stripe doesn't have to fit the majority opinion in a given market to be successful. I know conservative talk does very well in San Francisco. I also realize that progressive talk is catching on in some red-state markets.

But CHATTANOOGA???

There are fewer places more insular, fewer places less welcoming to a liberal.
Sure they have the aquarium and they murmur words like "sustainable development", but those are the words of a few wealthy mountain-dwellers -- rich Republicans in enviromentally friendly drag -- trying to convince their out of town friends that the city isn't still full of outhouses and the sky isn't leaden like it was in 1969.

Yes, Air America can eke out an existence in some Southern markets that have a lot of transplants (Atlanta and Miami for example). But Chattanooga hasn't exactly been a magnet for snow-fleeing Yankees for a long time.

Let's put it this way... if AAR can make it there, it can make it... anywhere.

This almost sounds like a feint to try to scare people into doing something to support the old format. <P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by FloridaBear1776 on 07/22/05 11:33 PM.</FONT></P>

Chattanooga is very welcoming, to anyone. That's the way they are there. But when a liberal moves in, he or she comes to realize just how much he or she is out of place.

If the alluded to report is true, the real dichotomy comes if the station really does want to keep popular morning man Earl and fill the rest of the day with Air America. If Earl supports the AAR schedule, his loyal conservative audience will turn elsewhere, to the station's loss. They'd be better off keeping money man Earl and going to other conservative talk shows not already on WGOW... like maybe Salem's talk network.

Don't let your personal political wants pollute your logic when it comes to business. Digging in the archives, I see that 42% of the Hamilton County voters went for Kerry, and four years earlier, 44% went for Gore.

Now, if every other station in town creates their programming assuming that everyone is Republican/Conservative and they get their little share of the 57%, I might be dumb as a fox if I go after the 43% ALL BY MYSELF!

Selling that concept to Republican oriented business owners might be a tough task.

Here's yet another item(July 25th):

On FRIDAY(7/22) CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock WTUN/CHATTANOOGA spin the format wheel to Classic Country as Country 101.9 THE LEGEND. Afternoon driver JIM BEAM stays with the station as PD/MD and will move into the morning drive slot. The station is currently running jockless, but a full air staff line up will be announced soon. Stay tuned to ALL ACCESS for more details as they become available.
