WAIRadio and SportStar Management Team Up
By Nate Hinkel
Arkansas Business - 2/6/06

A fleet of at least five Internet radio stations operating out of a trendy suite in a west Little Rock office building is a long way from running one country radio station on a home computer in a stuffy bedroom.

In less than two years, Steve Freeman’s faith in Internet radio has come full circle by recently joining forces with Gordon Media Group. The combined company will be moving under one roof March 1 at the Bowman Business Plaza at 1515 S. Bowman Road near the Arkansas Skatium, where it will launch a slew of new stations and begin fine-tuning them one by one.

Gordon Media Group of Little Rock, headed by radio veteran Gordon Heiges, is now the parent company to both SportStar Management, which it launched last fall, and TCR Radio, which includes Freeman’s Internet radio ventures.

“I’ve known Steve for a while, and when he started this company I recognized that there is some real potential here and asked him if I could join forces with him,” said Heiges. “We talked about it for a little bit and finally decided to put something together, and we worked out a deal and, before you know it, we’re one big happy family.”

You know Freeman from his “No Holds Barred” Internet radio talk program that is aired weekdays on the all-talk WAIRadio.com. He is also the creator of one of the Internet’s most popular country radio stations, KMVK.com, The Maverick, which quickly became one of the 10 most streamed stations on Live365.com, the Internet’s largest radio portal.

Freeman’s shtick is that Internet radio can be just as successful as terrestrial radio if it’s given the same treatment, like having live broadcasters and focusing on local issues and advertising.

Heiges has already seen benefits to the combination of Internet radio with the sports marketing end of his venture.

“We’re doing a lot in sports marketing and advertising, and we’ve been fortunate that we’ve been able to do a lot of tie-ins with some of the clients we have with SportsStar. The synergy has been unbelievable, more than what I ever expected it to be.”

You’ll recall, SportStar is run by former University of Central Arkansas football player Ray Daugherty, who landed an exclusive deal with his alma mater to officially own the multimedia selling rights to UCA athletics through the UCA Sports Network. SportStar sells advertising for all available media outlets, including radio and television networks, athletic facilities, and the department’s Web site.

Out to Launch

Part of the new company’s moving plans includes the launch of three new Internet stations, which will expand the demographics the company has to work with.

Zoo98.com, a current hit format station aimed at 18-34-year-olds, and KKYKradio.com, a classic rock effort, are both plays off former popular stations in the Little Rock market.

“Zoo98.com will be a lot of pop music mixed with some modern rock, which will be a perfect mix for that demographic,” said Freeman. “At KKYKradio.com, you’ll have a true classic rock station where you won’t hear anything from the last 15 to 17 years.”

Also launching soon will be KFSHradio.com, which will be a new take on your average contemporary Christian rock station.

Based on recent studies of listening trends, a good chunk of Christian radio listeners still turn to secular radio to hear songs they grew up listening to and to keep a pulse on pop culture.

“We’re going to blend rock, today’s hip Christian rock and urban contemporary Christian,” said Freeman. “As long as the songs are positive in nature, we’re going to incorporate a lot of mainstream music in there as well.”

One thing the stations will eventually all have in common is that Freeman and Gordon are seeking out “top notch talent” to be live on-air disc jockeys for each station.

Later Lynch

Freeman also said big changes are in store for WAI Radio beginning March 1, including the addition of a new morning show featuring former KARN talent Grant Merrill.

The morning show, to be called “Arkansas A.M.,” will run from 7-9 a.m. weekdays and will be a “news magazine-type show; very conversational with news, sports and interviews,” according to Freeman.

Pat Lynch’s show will be pushed back to a 9 a.m. starting time and will run through 1 p.m., when Freeman’s “No Holds Barred” will begin airing through 4 p.m.

The biggest change will be a new show that will fill the 5-8 p.m. slot that makes Little Rock the exclusive affiliate of a popular New York-based talk show called “The Young Turks.” It airs on 17 stations in markets nationwide, including a spot on Sirius satellite radio.

“It’s a politically left-leaning show,” said Freeman. “A lot of news, commentary and a lot of big name guests in news and political world.”

Gordon Heiges+Ray Daugherty+Steve Freeman+Pat Lynch+Grant Merrill+Carole Kramer= Look out Little Rock, somethings cookin'. I wonder what we don't know?

Whats the deal with a TALK station running a broadband-only feed. If WOXY.com can run a AAC+ lowband feed for music then surely a lil' ole internet station from Little Rock can.

Lots of places in Arkansas can't get cable or DSL internet service in this day and age.

Yet another stupid move in Little Rock radio.

Re: From Arkansas Business./revenue?

Why was the word revenue missing from the article.
Frankly I doubt there is any, did Freeman inherit
a ton of cash? The biggest problem for Internet
radio is having the ability to monetize your
brand. I'm surpised that another company would
jump into to this money pit.

Hey GendxerLR, I noticed you said "another stupid move in Little Rock Radio"...Please don't confuse the two. What Steve Freeman and crew are doing is not "radio". It's "Internet Programming" which if done right could pay a few bills and give some people jobs. However, it's far from "radio".

I noticed that Freeman said "If done right it will work". That's correct. If it's done right and they offer something no one else is offering the bottomline will be successful. It's not going to have a impact on radio in Arkansas.

I'll keep my example limited to the U.S. If Freeman and crew can tap into 2 % of the American population each day, that would equal over 6,000,000 listeners a day. I'm sure you know, that's 3 times more than the population of Arkansas. But if they don't offer something that can only be gotten there, it's not going to happen. Why start an internet station playing Music. That's not something that can ONLY be gotten at KKYKradio.com or Zoo98.com. Misguided!

Freeman...Give me a reason to tune in. I assure you, Freeman, I can get Michael Bolton and Guns N' Roses somewhere else with better quality than you can provide with an online stream. That is, unless you are giving me Michael Bolton singing Guns N' Roses. I'm sure there's a market for that...

Best of luck, but don't think you can revive the hay-days of KKYK and Z0098. Otherwise, those stations would still be around.

Re: From Arkansas Business./revenue?

It's so funny to read all of these posts. It sounds like a bunch of bitter radio guys pissed that they are still working for the "Radio Man" and have never had the balls to do anything on your own. What is wrong with someone doing something new or different. Some of you have very long and opinionated thoughts considering according to you, this whole IRadio thing doesn't matter. Have you ever thought that maybe these folks are carving out a niche of their own and not trying to be something they're not? The reason none of you think this will work is because none of you are doing it. On the revenue front, if there were none, Gordon Heiges would not be involved. As one who knows, none of you have any Idea what mr. Freeman has in store. You might want to watch the trade mags and stay tuned to Arkansas Business for the next two months, there's more to come, more terrestrial if you will......

Re: From Arkansas Business./revenue?

The whole IRadio thing DOESN'T matter. Right now.

But in 3 to 5 years, you'll be able to stream Internet stations in your car. Then.....look out.

This venture could bust...but that's what they said when little Billy Gates paid 10K for that DOS thingy...

What's funny is to listen to your bloated sense of reality.

Re: From Arkansas Business./revenue?

If Citadel closes on ABC Radio, that would give Citadel Little Rock to many stations. Maybe Freeman should be making friends with Citadel and tryin' to buy what they have to spin off.

Go get'em Steve!

They are saying that Radio Disney and ESPN Radio will be excluded from the sale of the ABC stations. So if this is true, technically I guess the Walt Disney Company would own 99.5 FM... This is just me thinking out loud...

But if Citadel were to be over the limit, I would guess 102.5 or 101.7 would likely be the first to go.

Ah yes, as if on cue, the thread degenerates into petty personal attacks...

I have no idea if this particular venture will actually turn a buck, but low-cost nationwide wireless broadband internet is on the way, and that certainly will change everything. EVERYTHING.

I'm sitting here listening to kkykradio.com at 128K on WinAmp, and ya know what? It sounds great. Audio quality is about a zillion times better than Magic or The Point. More power to 'em.

Re: From Arkansas Business./revenue?

Think again my friend. A list came out from a trade mag stating that Citadel and ABC radio only conflict in 5 markets. One of those was Little Rock. Even though Disney is hanging onto "Radio Disney" the stations are leaving. This Radio Disney (99.5) becomes Citadel property. Thus, the swap begins. If you are interested in owning a Little Rock signal, nows the time to get your bids in. Somethings got to go and I'm guessing it's going to be one of the rim shots.

Mogul, these stations are screaming your name, "buy me Mogul, buy me, before Freeman and crew do."

I'm curious to see how this all plays out.

99.5 is owned by Radio Disney Group, LLC., not ABC Radio.

Disney is keeping ALL of the Radio Disney owned and operated stations. Same with its ESPN Radio O&O stations.

ABC Radio / Disney sold about 22 radio stations (I think) of it's 70 total, and most of those were in major markets (NYC, L.A., Chicago, S.F....etc.)

I don't believe that KDIS is going to Citadel.

I could be wrong, have been before, and am sure somebody will correct me if I am. <P ID="signature">______________

Re: KDIS - don't think it's going to Citadel

I heard this morning that most ESPN and Radio Disney stations are staying with Disney. So KDIS is stayin and Citadel-LR is still OK with the amount of stations owned.

Stay tuned!
