I realize I'm too young to appreciate the whole Musicradio 77 thing, but seems to me this opens up a door for any of the underperforming 65-death NYC talkers to capitalize on WABC's ongoing schizophrenia.

With the endless weekend paid programming, ENDLESS money talk shows (Brinker, Insana, RAMSEY?!, enough!), and tape delayed weekday crap, can't SOMEBODY challenge this once great, now crappy station? Outside of Brian Whitman, I can't get excited about the lineup. Doesn't anyone want stimulating talk in New York? The kind of talk that took ongoing "nation's most listened to" challenger KFI's ratings from the low-2s to the 4s and 5s under CC's reign. "More Stimulating". I understand this isn't LA but I for one have enough.

Let XM keep pulling questionable time brokerage deals on a PUBLIC RADIO station (they broker time to anyone apparently)... the AM market here is dead if you speak English.

WOW, are you negative! Take a look at WABC's ratings. Not half bad, are they? And their billing? Again, pretty good. Saturday nights were a wasteland on WABC, yet anyone over 35 in the market knows about Musicradio 77. Given the dearth of oldies in NY, this would seem to be an excellent move to raise interest on a night that has been a loser for the station.

Perhaps it is because you do not recall this station that you are so negative about it. I do remember it from when I was a kid - and there's nothing else like it out there. Truly a unique radio station, Musicradio 77 was the greatest! They got colossal ratings back in the day - and this specialty show taps into that interest. Really brilliant, if you ask me. I, for one, will be listening tomorrow night.

Yes they make plenty of money and get good ratings, but it's by default. To ABC, that's fine... all they care about is the ratings and money. But to a lesser station, WABC's coasting could present an opportunity for another entity to pick up the slack for a certain audience.

I was not around to enjoy Musicradio 77, but have listened to airchecks a-plenty. I agree with you, great station; but WABC is a TALK station. Pick what you want to be. If you don't want to be a talk station, WOR should pick up for those of us who want to listen to that format.

If they're going to do it this way, why not just go music ALL weekend like 101.5? What else is on the roster on 770 weekends: Ron Insana, Bob Brinker, colon cleansing CDs, etc? Blow it out, too! Or for the love of God, just flip WPLJ already.

KLCB:

Throughtout the 70s and 80s, WOR played some MOR/AC music during the John Gamling Show. Gene Klavan also played music on his show. And WOR had several music shows on weekends.

WOR had good ratings during the 70s & 80s even though they were only a partial music station.

Thanks,

That's a "J".

True. They still do. And their octagenarian constituency loves it. If WABC wants to run music, God bless them. Not my bag, but I concede that a large number disagree. And my disappointment with WABC isn't limited to the weekend; a little local talk during the week would be nice. How about shutting off Mark Levin's mic in Dallas and keep him local to NYC. How about no more Laura Ingraham on 11-hour delay to satisfy TRN because Savage had you hiding under your desk? How about bringing back a local overnight show? People love to talk about snobbily about how "shows from outside NYC don't play well here", yet you've got the epitome of bland, overplayed, nonstimulating, suburban talk radio on overnights when you could be talking to the hundreds of thousands, likely millions, up and active from 1-5am. George Noory: great guy, not connected with NYC.

My contention is SOMEBODY should be talking about SOMETHING, ANYTHING at all times in market #1. And 570/970 doesn't count.

Have you listened to AirAmerica's local outlet 1190 WLIB? From Mark Riley to Rachel Maddow, Al Franken and the rest of their hosts, they offer stimulating chat, humor and call-ins. I enjoy them.

Of course, the politics are definitely left-of-center. :)

KJCB:

WABC had a local overnight talk show host and that was Steve Malzberg. Steve left and then WABC replaced him with George Noory.

I am aware of that. But Steve Malzberg does not have exclusive talents to do an overnight talk show.
