From BRW: WRKO Dumps Its Entire News Team

Well I know the 'RKO bashers are having a field day with this one. But there's a lot to like about 680...there's
Howie and...Howie, and...oh did I mention Howie?

Actually Greg Jackson was a good fill in for Feinburg tonight, tackling the issue of the legislature tabling the
vote on allowing people to vote on gay marriage. Whether or not you support same sex marriage, it's
interesting that there have been 6 or so initiative petitions that have been shot down by the lawmakers
even though there's a law saying a vote MUST be taken. He was talking to a rep. from Danvers who
was taking a lot of heat on this issue. Well at least it was local talk...

Wolfe/Kahn must be trying to do some major rehab at 'RKO--again, the only ratings I'm allowed to see are
12 + and they went up slightly, but I guess the folks at Entercom are cost cutting and the axe just fell.
I'd think Howie is safe but don't be too surprised if they maybe bring in some syndie like Glenn Beck, or
bring back Blute or some other local talent. The main thing for them will be the Sox.

And, oh, did I mention they have Howie Carr?

>>Sports / Talk Station

SportsRadio680 WRKO: Sox, Celts, some college sports...
Sports seems to be hot these days. In several cities it has replaced Air America (though often with
syndie stuff like ESPN or Fox Sports...cheap to run stuff off the bird, but more profitable than reg. talk...?

>>vertically challenged coffee boy

Why do you hate short statured people? Is this the reason why you don't think he's doing a good job?
You always seem to bring it up. Come on, you must have better reasons for criticizing someone.
He's short-statured. You're small-minded.

How many successful sports talk radio stations have you programmed?

Note that Wolfe inherited DePetro, Taste of Boston, and what was then Boston This Morning...
not his decisions.

Also consider he may be dealing with decisions made by upper management...

(Plus as a "furry"* I gotta pull for a guy named Wolfe!)

*--fan of animal anthropomorphics

I still like Howie and I still like the Olde Towne Team! Go Sox!
By the way how's Air America doing? Especially now that superstar Al Franken is leaving on Dec 8...
Not exactly a lot of local talk on 1200/1430, good OR bad, eh?

"WRKO: When You Compare Us To Air America, We Don't Seem All That Bad!" :)

"Phillip J. Fry" applied for the job of engineer...sanitary engineer. The Moderators should take garbage like
PJF and endorse it to RKO.

It sounded last night as though WRKO will rely on Metro/Shadow Traffic for their local news. I forget the guy's name who was on, but his sound most definitely wasn't polished. This is what we can expect from Metro/Shadow, though.

RKO doesn't care much about the quality of its local news. I sure hope this isn't a trend where local news becomes so homogenized that one bureay (Metro/Shadow) serves every station on the dial.

It can happen anywhere. It's the reality of corporate radio.

It seems that ever since Boston fell out of the Top Ten in Markets the stations around here have started to sound more and more like every other station across the country. The slow, painful death of RKO will just add more crap like Beck to the pile.

yep, Beck's gotta be a prime candidate for the 9AM -- Nooner..

R.I.P. WRKO..

I've also noticed that. What's the Sound of Boston? Sounds alot like many other metropolitan areas now, doesn't it?

Part of the move to milquetoast could be driven by the huge drop in ad revenues by so many stations across the dial. It's not that they're not making money, they're just making less year-over-year, and as we know, investors hate that.
Is it the business model? It would seem to me that a successful station these days would take full advantage of every possible revenue stream. I'm thinking in particular about online. How many stations sell online content separately?

At least some around the country do. I've listened to stations from New York, for example, on the air and online, and not all their ads online synch with what's on the air.

Metro/Shadow has the largest on air staff in the city with over 35 anchors doing broadcast work for nearly 60 radio and television stations in the greater metropolitan area.

What you can expect from Metro/Shadow is a better, more polished, and more experienced sound than you will hear on most any station that produces news from right out college grads or DJ's with no news sense or savvy whatsoever.

'RKO HAD SOME OF THE BEST NEWSPEOPLE IN THE BIZ, THIS IS INSULTING

What's insulting is the ongoing notion that Metro produces a sub-par product compared to "real radio." I'm not saying that RKO's staff was comprised of the "right out of sollege grads or DJ's with no news sense or savvy whatsoever" but most of the news produced at FM's around the city are. I was objecting to prior poster's suggestion that we shouldn't expect quality from a Metro/Shadow produced report.

I would absolutely agree that WRKO's news staff featured some of the best people in the business. I would also point out that Rod Fritz is a former Metro News Director and that Ben Parker, Sharon Smith, and Deb Daigle all worked at Metro prior to working at WRKO.

More utter stupidity from a time sales woman kicked up into a job beyond her limited intelligence- namely Julie Kahn and his vertically challenged coffee boy Jason Wolfe.

More personal insults from someone utterly incapable of discussing a horrible decision rationally. The last refuge of someone with no intelligent argument to make, is to make the same sort of insults that children make in the sandbox.

fine but don't try and say 'rko's news will IMPROVE with Metro, it will be far lower quality..

A. I never said that, you inferred it. Simmer down.
B. Whether WRKO's news product will be of lower quality appears to have significantly less to do with what quality Metro brings to the table as what the station chooses to do. Based on hearing what I did yesterday and this morning, RKO has opted to do decidedly less news. This would be the part of the plan where they emphasize the talk part of being a talk station.

THE BIGOTS AT WRKO ????????

Although Listo Fisher is on Panamanian decent it is sad that WRKO fired one of the only Black newsmen on Boston radio.

Wonder if the Black community will see some racial prejudice in this?
Still, that would be unfair to Listo whose talent is far beyond the color line.

Watch the RKO advertisers drop off now that it is sinking.

Break out the Champagne. The fall of this Entercom disaster couldn't happen to a ... Well, you get the point.

Will, the last person to leave the sneaker building please turn out the lights.

>>> interesting. probably the first time all the posters agree 100% across the board.

no other way to call it anymore, 'rko's dying, everybody knows it..
