From BRW: WRKO Dumps Its Entire News Team

Smoke is probably right. The news staff will be talking to other outlets and they very well could end up back on RKO, at least as voices from a third party.

Raccoon - you have to wake up and smell the coffee. Howie Carr is "one note Norman" - a hack writer from a yellow tabloid who stabbed his predecessor in the back to get the gig.

The Globe Spotlight Team will take down the Catholic Church, Howie gets to use their research for his radio show. Yours truly tipped H.C. off to the Cardinal Spellman flak in NY. They used to call Spellman "Her eminence" in the gay community back in the 1970s. Long before anyone would dare call Spellman a **** it was known he had his hot men in his limousine. Why didn't Carr lead the charge against the Catholic Church - when it was the paper he assaults - his competition - that did the heavy lifting.

Why didn't Howie Carr go after THE BIG DIG - make it a real issue, not just a Johnny Come Lately jump on the bandwagon reporting style. Had Howie uncovered the flaws maybe a young lady would be alive today.

We've seen his m.o. before in Boston Radio. It's called the Oedipus Complex. Oedipus would jump on anyone he saw heating up. The Cars were happening, Oedi jumped on the bandwagon. It was the hard work of
Maxanne Sartori, WCOZ and Fred Lewis that launched the Cars - not Oedi on WMBR 88.1 FM, though Oedi did play them. It was the COZ/BCN airplay that made the band happen - thanks to Fred Lewis - promo man for WEA or Atlantic or something before managing The Cars.

Howie Carr has never really jumped into a story other than Whitey Bulger. He's "One Note Norman", a one-issue-Charlie. His show would be adequate as a 9 to noon, but for a station to hang its hat on Carr,
well, he won't go down as a Jerry Williams, a Gene Burns, or a David Brudnoy. He's not iconic and his book is not big enough to get him Dennis Lehane status, not by a long shot. Heck, he stole the Civil Action role right out of Jerry Williams' hands, didn't he?

WRKO is a mess. Howie Carr doesn't do the work necessary to make him a national voice. He's got his niche and that's it. Who would want to buy advertising on his show outside of the Boston city limits?

Howard Stern took off immediately, Carr has floundered through these attempts at syndication. He doesn't have it. The Jones Radio Network and Air America hosts have more of an audience nationally, and deservedly so. Many haven't had the opportunities that Carr has, but they have struck a chord with an audience and people in multiple states are listening.

Thanks, Julius, for the link. Found a great story right away

"DePetro would say anything on the air, right? Didn't you tell me his ratings were in the tank? Plunged 50 percent over the summer?"

"DePetro and everyone else on that station. You'd think for being historic -- you know, Boston's third station -- they'd get it right. But the talk radio format's put them in the cellar. Now they're just veering further right. You heard about Howie and Fat Boy?"

" Randy says. "Let's say you're Entercom Communications, the corporate owner. They own the Number One in the market, WEEI, and the Number 16, WRKO. One pulls in $45.6 mil. The other does $8.4. I wouldn't put it past RKO to pepper-spray listeners, any way they can."

For all those who jumped on Casablanca or yours truly for the constant criticism of this awful station:

WE TOLD YOU SO

Garrett's freudian slip - Dinasour (dinosaur) is pretty funny. Sour indeed

...sportsradio 680 on the way? It certainly will be sports-related at night between Celts and Sox. Maybe put
some syndie or local sports talk just after the game (pick up ESPN affiliation, saying it's a stronger signal
than 890/1400). Talk days, sports nights. Let WEEI do local and Fox sports talk.

6-9 am Peter Blute
9-noon Tom Finneran
Noon-3 Rush or delayed Beck
3-7 Howie Carr
7-10 Celts or Sox or ESPN talk
10p-6a ESPN talk

>>Air America hosts have more of an audience nationally, and deservedly so.

LOL! Fractions of a percentage point in the ratings, $20 million in bankruptcy. Affiliate defections...
Franken quickly turns to Are You Ready For Some Football. Jones shows might have a future
but AAR might not last till the new year. Found a new buyer for 'em yet?

Howie is more than one note; I only wish he'd bring back features like It Must Stink to Be...; Caning Hour;
Jukebox from Hell...

Valurven is right on in this blog, I say...I had questions in other blog about future of RKO and plans for weekend/evening shows they are testing........anyone know anything?! Don't you think they have master plan pending....? You seem to have good info. valv...

Howie has more faithful fans than just me.

And yes I hope each and all of the 'RKO newsers get hired on either radio or TV. It would be good if
Metro/Shadow hired them so they could be back on 'RKO even. Or WTKK, etc.

Would I be correct in saying that WBZ 1030 AM is now the only commercial radio news operation left in Boston or not?

wrko wasn't a radio news operation. it had a news department within a talk station.
metro shadow is a news/traffic gathering service so you can term it as a radio news operation.

Don't let Panago or his gang hear that. He hates Metro/Shadow almost as much as WRKO itself.

maybe but i worry about people who can't be entertained -- i mean me an dmy husband were cracking up when saturday team (tedellen) was fighting through the primary (moonbat vs. right wing) it ws good stuff. if you can't laugh at howie and the mayor sound track, you can't laugh. meanwhile, people who are on blogs with this much insider information SOMETIMES (not saying always) might have an AGENDA (like maybe htey WORKED there?!)

howie is good radio EVEN if you arer sick of all guys all right wing all the time. he may not have IT natinoally, but locally he's the man.

i agree with that. howie is entertaining on most days. that's why his show and the red sox are only two things you can sell on 'rko. everything else is crap - 50 cents on a dollar. fatso scotto needs to go quickly and it sounds like from their sales guys, the end is fast approaching for his run on there. he's no morning man in a major market. two people(fatso and the manic from ri) were hired by the guy who is no longer there. so, jason like a seasoned pro is doing the right thing by cleaning house, dumping the garabage and starting from scratch. the manic thought he was getting fired for the fat remark. it was just another of way of management to dump him.

some of howie's topics could use a makeover, though.

Ex-RKO newsie here. Now living in the Midwest. OUT of the business (as Jerry would say).

I needed a friend of a friend from Boston to tell me just tonight of the big changes at the once Big 68. So I did a Google search to see if it was true. My oh my!

I am reminded of a a prescient colleague from New York radio, now deceased. Gus Engleman, upon his release after decades of service to WABC-AM, told me then that the entire industry is going to Shadow News.

That was circa 1980. I didn't believe him. But a quarter of a century later, we are all getting the point. Thanks Gus!

And have no fear, Listo and Fritz will survive -- if, indeed, they care to in a business that ain't what it used to be.

P.S. LaPierre, finally retiring?? My oh my !

The axe has also fallen on some newsies/staffers at Clear Channel's WHYN in Holyoke (a Howie affiliate)
acc. to NERW

http://www.fybush.com/nerw.html

>>"the cuts all but eviscerated the news department at WHYN (560) last week...WHYN is down to a single newsperson, John Baibak - and the people of Springfield and Hampden County are all the poorer for the lack of a full-fledged radio news department in town"
