From Free FM to Fresh FM

What do you think of this option for CBS's WCKG. Flip to "Fresh" a hip very current based AC (see former WNEW-FM, NYC @ Fresh1027.com). They would seriously impact Lite FM who seems to be rather vulnerable right now trying to be everything BUT a mainstream AC, and The Mix, who has really not much going on outside E&C. Who do you think the airstaff should consist of?

If CBS were to try Fresh FM (if that's what it would be called), it would have to be programmed in a way that it would affect the Lite. As it stands, The Lite has heritage, and that's usually hard to beat. But they need some real competition, just like WTMX needs real competition, unless you wanna consider Lite & The Mix to be competitors.

You just might have something there, Jock. In the event CBS is interested in making CKG a viable frequency again, that would solve the problem. So here's how it could go down:

CBS either doesn't renew Mike North from WSCR when his current contract is up, either sending him to WFAN or letting him go all together. They move Steve Dahl to replace North on WSCR, forcing him to go back to mornings. CKG moves Garry Meier up to their morning show, and that opens the rest of their day for "Fresh" music.

What CBS in Chicago "saves" on Mike North would probably cover personalties for the other dayparts, since the music would be the thing.

Another way to make this happen would be for CKG to let Dahl go elsewhere, and then return to WLUP in order to stay on afternoons.

Only thing getting in the way is that something like this makes too much sense.

Steve Dahl doing mornings on the Score will kill off that station. You obviously don't know much about North's target audience, as his ratings have been strong in the male 25-54 demographic. Dahl's ratings amongst the same target audience aren't bad, but this same audience tunes into the Score for sports, not for aimless ranting and begging which is what Dahl specializes in. The Score learned in their ill-fated attempt to broaden their subject matter a few years ago that sports fans don't want to hear about politics on an all-sports station! And while North's show does occasionally stray from sports talk, Dahl wouldn't even know the difference between a baseball and a basketball!

Nope, I say keep Dahl as far away from the Score as possible!

This could be why the Mix has broadened their playlist in recent months, adding in more rhythmic product in order to protect themselves from a possible new competitor. That, or they are more likely echoing the trends in the sound of the Hot AC format, which seems to be heading a bit more CHR leaning of late.

WTMX adding rhythmic songs, in my opinion, has nothing to do with battling a future competitor. Rather, it's the result in a trend of the latest research findings that show older women are digging rhythmic songs.

Hot AC's, once timid of rhythmic tracks, are starting to add them.

Typically in anticipation of, or in battling, a competitor you tighten up your list.

And I personally think that's a great thing. Considering today's mainstream CHR's are so rhythmic leaning anyway, Hot AC's are starting to become the "new" mainstream CHR, so long as they don't start adding hard core rap songs. Like I said, the trends are probably the main reason they are adding the rhythmic songs. It adds to the flavor of their playlist, something Canadian Hot AC's have been doing for years already.

'CKG has two years left on their contract to run the Bulls. FM sports-talk? Why not.

Mix is now playing Carrie Underwood Before He cheats...what the hell are they thinking?

Because that song is in the top 5 nationally on the Hot AC chart. Not saying that they have to play it, but since it is very popular amongst their 25 to 40 year old female demographic, there probably is an audience for it.

If CBS radio can flip those Free/Fresh FM trainwrecks in Phoenix and San Diego. How come they cannot flip Chicago? You know V-103 needs some REAL competition!!!!!!!!!! Go Urban AC.

They were both FREE-FM stations CBS flipped yesturday. The only Fresh station is Fresh 102.7 in NYC. So the trainwrecks were the FREE-FM's.

CBS should register www.fresh1059.com and www.1059freshfm.com if they want to maybe down the road flip Free FM. Oh and www.fresh1043.com and www.1043freshfm.com isn't register either, maybe CBS could flip Jack to Fresh. But I only think time will tell. This as Fresh 102.7 is doing good in New York City.

What research have you seen suggests "fresh" would work in Chicago? The biggest problem CBS (and others) has had is jumping on a format (or gimmick) as a panacea for all their troubles in almost all their markets.

I don't foresee 105.9 flipping anytime soon; they do need to fix morning drive for certain; but Dahl does well in the target demo - and putting Gary on the air has been a great move that should pay off down the road.

Im just saying it might help the station. But Chicago might not need a "Fresh" as Chicago has two ACs which aren't that high in the ratings. What else could CBS put on 105.9 that is a music format then?
