FS: Focusrite Platinum Voicemaster Pro...

Somebody from around here with a mostly similar username suggested that some of you folks might be interested in such a thing, so I figured I'd post here before heading off to ebayland. Hopefully I'm posting this in the right forum... if not, apologies, let me know and I'll move it.

Up for sale: Acquired this Focusrite VMP used about a year ago in a package deal. Don't really have a need for it, and I've actually only had it out of the box 3 times. Hooked it up twice... once to see if/how it worked and another to test out some mics. Everything seems to be in perfect working order.

Guessing most of you are familiar with this unit, but in case you aren't, find out more here...
http://www.focusrite.com/index.php?...e&productName=voicemaster_pro&imageName=front

Looks new except for some scratching on the top of the case (can't see when racked) from the previous owner pulling it in and out of a rack. This obviously does not effect sound or performance in any way. I can email pics upon request. Includes power cord, manual and original box.

They seem to go on ebay for between $350 and $450 used... $600-ish new. I'm looking for a best offer, so drop me a PM with yours if interested... keeping the above ebay #'s in mind, of course. I have over 50 successful transactions between ebay, gearslutz.com, and talkbass.com with perfect feedback, all under the username "chrisp2u".

Trades might also be considered... other recording equipment, decent mics... if it's something of more value and I'm interested I can possibly throw some cash your way as well.

Thanks for looking.

Would you take a Neumann BCM 104 for it? It's about a $1,000 mic new...I've have it for 3 years. It's in mint condition. We just have several Neumann's at work including a 20 year old U87 and I honestly havent used mine in 6 months, but I've wanted one of the Voicemaster Pro's for a while. Let me know...

I'm guessing that wouldn't be a straight trade? ;)

Hmmm... I can't seem to find too much about that mic, so I'm not sure how it would fit in with what I typically do (which is not VO stuff), and it seems to be broadcast-oriented. So, I'm probably gonna have to say pass on that offer.

I should also probably take this opportunity to expand upon the life history of this box a bit, too. As previously mentioned, I bought this (along with some other stuff) from a gentleman whom owns a smoke-free home recording studio. Having visited his studio space during the purchasing process, he seemed like an decent, honest guy that takes quite good care of his equipment as far as I could tell... so, I have no reason to doubt any of his claims. He had told me that he owned it for just over a year, and had no problems with it whatsoever. His reason for selling was that he had replaced it with some higher-end gear and it was sitting unused for a few months until I purchased it.

Originally, I was going to get the optional A/D for it and hold onto it, but things changed. Seeing that I haven't used it and it doesn't seem to fit into my "master plan", it's the sacrificial lamb. I mainly want to get rid of it without the extra ebay hassle and fees, if possible, so I've been putting it up for sale on some music/audio production boards. Since I've had it, it's spent over 99.9% of it's time still in the box.

I've just put a price on it locally at $300 because I need to move it out to help cover another purchase I just made. So, I'm willing to go $300, plus actual shipping and insurance costs, plus any fees incurred with the sale (ie. PayPal, which is preferred). Guessing it would end up in the $330 range total shipped to most places in the CONUS.

I do currently have a potential local buyer that is going to take a look at it in the next few days, so if you're still interested, let me know and I'll save your place in line.

On an aside (and I don't want this thread to veer too far off track), I do find it interesting re: some of the posts around here and the reliability of these units. Are you guys talking about the old Voicemaster or the newer Pro units?

In either case I do believe they are both Class A devices which typically do run pretty hot by nature. It's always good form to leave at least a rack space (or 2) above and below such gear so that they get adequate ventilation. Also good to place the warmer stuff toward the bottom of your rack. Having some fans in your rack to move warm air out is always a good idea as well. I believe there's even a warning in the front of the VMP manual regarding most of this stuff.

Granted, it doesn't feel like the most heavy-duty piece of gear I've held, but I can't imagine that these things would be failing so quickly or frequently as it seems to be discussed here if they were treated properly, but hey, YMMV.

Out of all the online research I had done on these units, this is the only place I've seen people complaining of them failing... over at the gearslutz site (probably the harshest gear site in existense) they just complain that they sound horrible. :-\

The only story of failure I found was a guy on the homerecording board saying that his crapped after he plugged it in to a bad power socket (guess he had toasted 2 other processors the same way)... but then it apparently started working again at some point.

??? Oh well.
