FSAz lower third

Please forgive me if some consider this to be a lame question.
Watching the Suns play on FSAz, I've noticed an addition to the lower third score graphic. They now are showing something called a bonus. What is a "bonus" and to what end does it affect a score? The hash marks included seem to be adding to the mystery. Do these represent a team foul? Will FSAz continue with the bonus graphic come March when the D'Backs start their season?

Not a need to know, just really curious. ???

I don't know what the "bonus" means...but here's something I found about your question...I think? :)

FSN O&O's and national programming began to phase in the new standard Fox Sports graphics package (which originally debuted with Fox's NFL coverage in 2010), beginning with the 2011 MLB season, the 2011 college football season, the 2011-12 NHL season and the 2011-12 NBA season. FSN affiliates owned by DirecTV Sports Networks re-branded as Root Sports at the start of the MLB season as well, but initially still used the previous FSN graphics (but with elements from a new dedicated package, which formally debuted at the start of the NHL season. However, at the start of the preseason NBA broadcasts still use the previous year's graphics, even though Fox Sports Ohio debuted with the new graphics in the D-League Canton Charge's debut game. Eventually, they adopted the new graphics for NBA broadcasts on Christmas Day 2011 (which debuted with College Basketball broadcasts in November 2011). Even though it adopted the new graphics, Fox Sports Arizona's Phoenix Suns broadcasts continued to use the old score banner until they switched to the new one in January 2012.

I think it refers to the fact that the team is "in the bonus", meaning that they get free throws every time they're fouled. Normally, a team shoots free throws only if fouled in the act of shooting the ball; if they were not shooting, they would take the ball from out-of-bounds with a fresh 24-second clock. But, after four fouls in any quarter, the team being fouled is "in the bonus", and gets free throws for every foul thereafter.

+1 A nice "old school" term!
