FSR Back in Akron, OH...Sort Of

When last we visited the situation in my home market, Fox Sports Radio affiliate WTOU/1350 had dropped the network, and Premiere's Jim Rome, for liberal talk as "Radio Free Ohio" under the new calls WARF.

Starting July 5th, according to AllAccess.com, FSR returns to the Akron market... via east suburban rimshot daytimer WJMP/1520 Kent, as "Fox Sports Radio 1520".

The irony here? WJMP ITSELF had just changed, in May, to a liberal talk format featuring the Air America network. The presence of WARF made WJMP's owner, MediaCom, Inc. (owner of much larger FM-based talker WNIR), blink and change to the FSR feed 1350 dropped to go liberal talk.

Anyone who's still aching to hear Steve Czaban, Chris Myers or JT The Brick (no one's aching to hear Van Earl Wright) in Akron will have to strain to hear 1520 in much of the market. It's 1000 directional watts out of a facility between Kent and Ravenna, and a daytime station to boot (so there goes much of JT's show). The signal is inaudible south of downtown Akron due to ON CHANNEL WINW/1520 out of nearby Canton.

Let's not forget that the 1520-Kent facility once played "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" non-stop as a stunt during the entire (!) 1994 baseball strike. That says enough of MediaCom and WJMP.

I can't wait to hear FSR boast that they're back in Cleveland with tiny, tiny WJMP. Of course, WJMP's laughable TOH ID ("This is WJMP: Kent/Akron/Cleveland") won't help ;D

Seems like Fox Sports will have a very hard time in that neck of the woods.
