FT Myers - Charlotte County

I know that this is primarily a Tampa "channel" but it also serves radio markets all the way down to Naples. I have noticed a lack of postings for this "fringe" area for many months now. Just wondering why.

Long story short: Nothing major happens on a regular basis in the Fort Myers market. The last huge development was WINK News Radio debuting, and that was last summer. But, yes, if something happened in Fort Myers radio, this is the forum where it would go.

WOLZ switched to "The River", more recently, other than that, nobody is reporting much.

If you notice something, report it. We'll put our observations and opinions in there.

Of that you can be sure.

Because, we're cool like that... 8)

I would say the biggest development in the RSW area over the past three years was WINK's old format (Rush et al.) moving to 92.5.

(RSW = Fort Myers' airport code.)

The funny thing about that is that the two AM's (1240 & 1270) that were the original homes of Rush ect are STILL broadcasting the same thing. When 92.5 was flipped to talk the WINK people said that the AM's would simulcast for up to year but it's getting close to two years now and still no change. How many markets out there can claim not one, not two but THREE stations all simulcasting Rush, Beck and Hannity? Certainly there must be SOMETHING they can come up with for those two AM's. Anything!

Be afraid! Be very afraid!

Seriously though:

1.) They may have found signal problems with the 92.5 that, for now, inhibit the growth of the station.
2.) The agreements for the 1240 or 1270 may have fallen through.
3.) Selling 92.5 as a solo station may be proving more difficult than originally thought.

Does anyone know why the ratings seems for Fort Myers seems to stop at Fall 2009. It still shows WINK AM as number 2, whereas 92.5 should probably be occupying that spot today. More to the point, how is the new WINK 1200 doing?

Hey there "Pollitt"!

The lack of a format change, etc., has made for a quiet market.
The FM's are all plodding along, same old, same old. Gator owns country. WINK-FM can't settle on a format. Bob really needs to get new liners and drop that insipid delivery! And there is a big hole for something resembling Smooth Jazz. Dream 98.5 is missed.

On AM, the waste of wattage that is the 92.5/1240/1270 trimulcast continues. 1410 and 1660 "Timeless Cool" try to be a factor, but continue to stumble over themselves. Some of their best shows are the weekend brokered ones!

WKII has the ridiculously named "Prime Choice" (read: the most generic talent, music and content I have ever heard) on most of the time, with the only bright spot being Jeff Collins, their local midday guy. He's only on sporadically, but isn't afraid to play actual oldies instead of "Get Down Tonight" for the millionth time. Oh, he does play the expected crap, but the other ones he throws in are a treat. The afternoon guy "Hot Rod Todd", although he is local, sounds like he's on speed and helium, and you get the impression he really likes to listen to himself talk. Too bad Scott Dayton couldn't have survived the format shift. Just think of the heavyweight air talent mornings and mid-days. And I do mean heavyweight!! Pollitt knows Scott Dayton very well. Sees him daily, so he can express my condolences. As an ex-PD, etc., I think I know why SD didn't survive the format change, but that's the radio biz. Here today, Gone today. Burn that candle...

Oh yeah, the AM band. 770 still running sports and IBOC. I'm happy for them. 1440 is Spanish Christian. 1530 and 1580, I have to say, I pay no attention to. Likewise the "Big Crumb" (WCRM 1350). Also Spanish religion.

Did I leave anyone out? Oh yeah... 1200/1460 WINK news. Their best talent is John Conrad. The news format is OK but not great.

Every time I go back home to Lehigh, I seem to enjoy radio a bit more than Orlando, mainly because station's playlist is a little more free, but dated. (Ex: Still playing the hits of 2010, not 2011.)

I also like the addition of 91.9 Call-FM, which plays Dance & Holy Hip Hop, something that Orlando doesn't have.

92.5 was great when they were Oldies.

Lite 93.7 is the only station that does the automated song ID at the end of every song that I know of.

I absolutely HATE that 96.5 Reach-FM translator! Now I can't pick up Power 96 from Miami anymore!

I hear more Freestyle on WINK-FM 96.9's "Saturday Night Dance Party", remembering DJ Art Rooney's "Old School Dance Party" about 10 years ago.

98.5 is still a waste of a good signal & still sounds like an AM.

Z100.1 needs to come to Orlando.

The only radio station I've heard Sarah Brightman on is WAVV 101.1.

The playlist on 102.9 Bob-FM is pretty wild & interesting.

B103.9 has "B-Sides" late night on weekends, which I lock on. The only station that plays Dubstep.

Mix 104.7 still has DJ Art Rooney on Saturday nights. I've been following him for years since WINK. Somewhat odd to have an all-Dance mixshow on a Hot AC.

There was a random pirate on 107.5 playing R&B/Funk when I was home a couple weeks ago. Can't complain. The music of James Brown was on the radio for once in a blue moon!

That's my 2-cents in the market I grew up in.

Where is the translator located?

The translator is W243BM [96.5mHz] Suncoast Estates - Cape Coral operating with 26-watts at 302 feet. It re-broadcasts 100kw WREH-FM 90.5 Cypress Quarters [Okeechobee].

The one that's bothering him is the Lehigh one, W243AR, located in beautiful downtown Lehigh acres. The Suncoast Estates one has its transmitter in a boatyard, BTW.

Thank you both for the replies.

Off-topic:

Suncoast Estates...where the homes are mobile but the cars are not.

:D

Yep, I am indeed talking about the expletive Lehigh Reach-FM translator.
