Fudge: AAR UP 43% in L.A.

The subject of this topic is true, sort of, but also ridiculous....but no more ridiculous than the subject a little further down, "Drudge: AAR Down 1/3 in NY." The Arbitron 12+ numbers are hardly precise measurements and a change of a fraction of one percent is meaningless. But I don't see Drudge or the other AAR bashers saying that because the latest Arbitron 12+ number for KTLK saw a slight increase (from Fall to Winter) then that means that the audience for "AAR" or "libtalk" in Los Angeles was "up" by MORE than "1/3."

AAR UP 43% in L.A.

What is significant is KTLK's share in the LA market has more than tripled since the Winter book last year. From the numbers quoted in trade advertising, Stephanie Miller (in morning drive) has a great deal to do with that and she is showing substantial gains in the money demos, as well.Of course, most people here are limited in the Arbitron data to which they have access, and we are all limited in talking about specific Arbitron numbers. What is clear is progressive talk started small in LA and has shown consistent growth in the nation's most competitive radio market. In the past year, KTLK has pulled even with Salem's established social conservative news-talk KRLA, and is now within striking distance of (Sing:) "KFWB News 98." Let me underline that KTLK's ratings growth has been consistent, which makes this much more significant than much-discussed examples of stations which spike - or crash (apparently as a result of some fluke in Arbitron's methods) - and then return to where they had been in the prior book. The Arbitron share numbers are averages. A good showing (or a bad showing) in morning drive has more impact on the average numbers than does good or bad showings evenings or weekends with much smaller audiences. So KTLK's showing is most strongly influenced by (in order): Stephanie Miller (AM Drive), Randi Rhodes (PM Drive), Ed Schultz and Al Franken (middays) - currently the strongest players in progressive talk.Stephanie would probably do even better in morning drive with a truely local show. The ratings history of local shows going into syndication commonly shows a drop in numbers in their home market (Ed Schultz on KFGO and Sean Hannity on WABC are two examples). But Stephanie is still a local presence and is promoted that way. (Randi might also do somewhat better live, rather than delayed.)Again, KTLK demonstrates the key to success in progressive talk radio is selectively to pick the strongest hosts in a given market (ideally, including local programming) and to promote the station brand. This is the model Clear Channel follows with their larger and more successful progressive talk stations, and this is likely what Randy Michaels' P1 will do should they operate WLIB in New York as a progressive talk station.
