Full-digital IBOC is "probably not going to happen"

Re: Full-digital IBOC is \

The price is attractive, and I hope it comes along...However, I am cheap, and will not place a bet on something that does not have the FCC blessing as the "defacto standard"....I know, I and many others are in a "Catch 22"....but that is better than a "Catch-22"....just my thoughts...

Jboyd sez:
>My hi power FM is a C-2. A dual Analog/Digital 25 KW transmitter lists at 135,000.
>A combo analog/digital antenna at 75,000. Add a digital stl, boards for two studios, and associated equipment
>and you are all over 300,000.
>And you are right, I do not expect to see prices come down. Thanks

I'd use the existing antenna and transmitter, assuming it has about 10% headroom. Inject the iBOC at high level, alls you would need is the injector and the digital transmitter and waster load. Which will run you arounf a hunnert and a half Large. I'd bet your current setup is capable of 20KHz response, excepting the STL, which you might need to upgrade.

None of which changes the original premise, it probably isn't top your advantage to make a change till there's someone out there to listen to it, or until you're forced to do so by the regulatory process.

So if you have $10,000 or so, or whatever it actually costs, what have you got to lose by trying FMeXtra?

Well, pretty much $10,000 plus any installation, marketing, opportunity cost or other misc. costs. If there are NO radios out there that pick it up, it's a waste. With Ibiquity pushing their HD Radio and XM and Sisius pushing sat radio, who's pushing FMeXtra? (cue wind blowing)

Don't get me wrong, it's a slick idea.

FMeXtra seems better suited for a captive leasing deal, not radio broadcast.

Re: Full-digital IBOC is \

Thanks , fellas...my existing analog does not have headroom, and is over 15 years old...soo...I am opting (IF I do it) to replace both at same time...the analog antenna has had a few lightning strikes, and it will go too (IF). Being an engineer, I am afraid I tend to err on the liberal side with equipment. (I am 67 and have to maintain this monkey farm...my justification to get what I want).
NEMISSISSIPPI...do I know you? Thanks again...JBI

Yes. We've met once and talked a few times. Sold you (your son) a tower beacon about 10 yrs ago. I'm the former owner (and janitor) of WCMR.
