Fun 107 in R.I.

I put that station on the air in 1989 and unless they have changed their facilities or have a translator, their signal starts to get real
noisy around the Braga Bridge in Fall River.

Moving east along I-195, the signal begins to have some problems in Seekonk and into downtown Providence. It is not unlistenable; there is just a lot of static. Moving south along I-95 and onto Route 4, the signal comes in better and better. In much of eastern South County, especially near the beaches, Fun 107 comes in like a local. North of Providence, the signal does not do badly either.

I was hired at the original FUN 107. But I had to bail before the station ever actually went on the air. I did a practice run in the studio the week before they turned the transmitter on. But then I was reminded that I had signed a non-compete contract at another Fall River station where I was already full time. It may not have even been that much of a problem to work both stations since Fun 107 was just a weekend thing anyway. But a couple of people freaked me out over it. So I just said screw it and kept my full time gig at WSAR. This has nothing to do with your question.

If I remember my WFHN history correctly, WFHN signed on with 2.4kw from the Pope's Island tower in New Bedford. Around '98 they moved to the UMass Dartmouth campus, but then moved back to Pope's Island in 2003/2004. They currently run 5.4kw, directional to protect the northeast (toward Providence) to protect first-adjacent WAAF. It's better than the original signal, but still not great in Prov. proper.

Fun 107's signal dies as you hit the CT boarder also south of Coventry in RI. Fun has always been a great station. It has had some great jocks over the years also....
Christie Whimer, Mark Avery, Frankie V, Mikey V, Erika Kay, JR and koonenbacher and Christine Fox. Plus many others i am too tired to remember!

I built that station from scratch and have very fond memories of putting it on the air. It sounds like the facilities have changed a couple of times over the years. I do not live in the area any longer, so I cannot comment on the current coverage. It was great to work with all the people who moved across the country to be a part of that station. Good times...

thanks Jay Day. It is a great station and had turned out really successful jocks. JR is a great guy to work for and I just hope that it will remain as unique and cutting edge it had prior to the cumulus purchase. I truly enjoyed working there and can think of only ONE that didn't. They are a risk taker in every capacity. Citadel did a great job giving the staff autonomy

IIRC, Fun107's signal gets tough to listen to at least a few miles SE of Providence in no small part because of first-adjacent WAAF 107.3...and that this issue was exacerbated when WAAF turned on HD carriers a few years back.
