Fun 107 has always been a perfect example of well done local radio. From the start, it's vision was to cover the New Bedford-Fall River market. WFHN is a class A signal broadcasting from Fairhaven (with an auxiliary site at UMass Dartmouth which was briefly their primary in the '90s). As class A, it would be next to impossible to re-focus on the bigger Providence market... sort of the same boat as WZRI/WKKB.
Personally, I am glad to see that a station on FM does serve the area (credit also to WJFD-FM). Up until 1989, WCTK (as WMYS) actually focused on NB-FR as well. I have a feeling that 'FHN partially played a roll in 'MYS's flip to country. Some of the original 'FHN promos would poke fun at 'MYS. I recall in it's first few years after the 1989 launch, they billed themselves as "Bristol County's Power Station" and in the late '90s, "South Coast's #1" after WCVB and The Standard-Times helped coin the region as "South Coast" (sometimes spelled Southcoast).
In regard to the format, it's a bit unfair to try and ask the question which is better; Pro-FM or Fun 107. Pro-FM is basically Mainstream/CHR, while Fun 107 is a hybrid Mainstream/Rhythmic (also varies slightly by daypart). However, if you compare the two in regard to personalities and the amount of live and local content versus voicetracking, I would say that Fun 107 takes the award. Again since it's start, they have always been ahead in starting the careers of several personalities, and have always had a good selection of weekend talent (in fact, I was one of them from 2002-2004, however my opinions here are unbiased).
Anyway, that's my 2¢ for what it's worth.`
