Fun TV Guide listing:December 22, 1964 (On Topic)

A word of explanation:
One of my pastimes recently has been to copy various Cleveland TV Guide Listings from the Akron/Summit County Public Library and much less often from Cleveland Public Library (I will be making my last Greyhound trip to Cleveland from Canton tommorow to CPL because Greyhound seems to think that Canton is not a large enugh city to support a Greyhound bus station, which will close in Canton Oct.30, but I digress)

When I copy these listings from the 50's and 60's I gravitate toward the Holiday season listings because I admit to being very nostalgic about Christmas and the Holidays, especially with the classic TV Specials, Mr. Jingeling, etc..

In copying TV Guide from my last trip to Akron I found an interesting somewhat humorous listing for Tuesday, December 22, 1964 for KYW 3 (NBC) Below is the listing copied in it's entirety:

7:30 3 Three Nights before Christmas

SPECIAL KYW Radio And TV Personalities team up for a Christmas Greeting to Cleveland Viewers. Mike Douglas sings and so does Dick Goddard, who makes his artistic debut with "White Christmas". Pat Murray, Jim Graner, Barnaby and Woodrow do the comedy, and the Radiomen cavort in Santa's clothes. Also:A combined choir from University and Laurel Schools provide traditional carols.(60 Min.)

Ths sort of highlights what's missing in traditional broadcast TV (and Radio) these days..a sense of personality and fun..I havent seen a show such as this since WUAB 43 did their "Christmas Party" years ago..As corny as it probably was in 1964..shows like this made a station "Local" (off soapbox)

Off-Topic Question...

That can't possibly be...when did that happen? And will Greyhound buses still be stopping at the SARTA station, even just as a flag/drop-off?

from what I gather, probably not. There is talk of Lakefront Lines taking up some of the slack once Greyhound leaves..( the closing was announced about a week ago)SARTA may end up making an extra Akron Stop at the Greyhound there

After I replied, I looked this up in the archives of the Repository, and sure enough...Greyhound pulls out of Canton at the end of the month, not to return. It also appears they are stopping the Canton-to-Columbus route entirely, pulling flag stops along the way, and no longer stopping at a station in Wooster.

Lakefront Lines has one or two buses stopping there right now. The city is apparently going to try to convince them to take over the Greyhound space at the SARTA transit center, and add more service. It'll be interesting if that happens...there appears to be at least some decent patronage there.

If SARTA adds Akron's Greyhound station to its route, it wouldn't be that tough, as it's right off I-76 not far from the Central Interchange. They could just go into downtown via Broadway after that.

FYI, Warren's Greyhound stop is now history, too. One of LFL's lines goes from Canton to Warren, and I wonder if the latter is just a flag stop now.

OA:
As I Mentioned previously I made a trip to Cleveland yesterday. there were probably 6 passengers that got off at Canton on my return trip with the same number boarding. Even the Canton Greyhound employees are quoted as saying there is enough business. My wife and I over the last 5 years or so have taken Greyhound trips to St. Louis, Mo. and Orlando, Fla. We stopped at towns that amazed me that Greyhound stopped at they were so small. Similar in size to say, Brewster, Navarre, Magnolia, Waynesbutg, etc. Many of these small town stops Greyhound has eliminated recently. In researching, Canton may be the largest city as of now that Greyhound is leaving..The only one of similar or larger size is Rome, Georgia. As of November, I-77 only stops at Cleveland, Akron, Cambridge, and Charleston, W. Va. Dover and Marietta stops are gone..Cambridge-Charleston seems like a long way without a stop. The whole thing just makes no sense to me..

EDIT: I just looked up Greyhound time tables online. It seems like they've eliminated the direct I-77 route entirely Except from Cleveland to Akron. to get to Cambridge (OH) from Cleveland you have to go through Columbus and Mansfield with an 1-2 hour layover in Columbus depending on the trip. (Plus to get to Cambridge from Akron or Canton You have to go to Cleveland first) Which makes for a 5-6 hour trip to go 138 miles. The return trip makes even less sense 6-7 hour return with aabout a 1 1/2-2 1/2 hour layover in Pittsburgh?? This for a trip that should take a little over 2 hours. This same scenario is playing out all over the country I imagine. I dont take Greyhound that often, but as I don't drive a car it was nice to have the convenience there. Greyhound has gone downhill the last several years in my estimation anyway.
