funk/soul station in Nashville ~20 yrs. ago

i just got into a conversation with someone about old funk/soul from the 1970s, and it reminded me of some old station in Nashville that was all 70s funk/soul sometime around the late 1980s. I don't think it lasted all that long, & i don't recall much about it except that it was at the higher end of the FM dial, maybe in the 104 range.

anybody remember anything about this? I've never lived in Nashville, but i used to drive thru it quite a bit in the late 80s, & i absolutely loved this station! It was just so odd, so completely unexpected, and so cool since there were none like it anywhere else that I ever heard. I don't think it was typical 'radio fare,' though those tunes may have gotten airplay in the early 70s on the AM dial. I'm only 39, so that's a bit before I listened to radio.

It wasn't 104.5's attempt at Groovin' Hits...that was before it became 104.5 The Core in late 90's. Even later was 106.7 Kiss FM.
Rockin Hits was after KX104 in the mid 80's. The Arrow was after that, although maybe there was a breif stint in between there.
I was out of the market in those years. What was it??? Someone was sober enough to recall?!?!?

I can't remember a funk/dance station on the right end of the dial. 107.5 has been counrty, AC and CHR. 106.7 has been around since only the late-90's, 105.9 was rock, then easy listening, AC, then classic rock. 104.5's chronology since the late-70's has been CHR, classic hits and talk. Does anyone remember WBGY Boogie 93? They were out of Tullahoma (since then 93.3 is in Huntsville). Boogie 93 dabbled with hit radio or dance in the 80's and their signal here was good. They advertised at the huge billboard at 16th/West End/Broadway. I got a laugh from one of their Saturday programs: the top ten music video countdown. Watch the radio carefully, a video might appear. Talk about milking the MTV cow.

The only other dicso format I recall is Romer's Magic 1300. Chris, was 1300 a simulcast with 92Q at one time? If so, was it dance or urban?

yeah...WMAK and 92Q did have periods of simulcast...back in 1980 when WMAK dumped the disco for oldies,
morning drive was simulcast with Steve McCoy and Mary Glen...using the 92Q AC/CHR format. Then when the
brain trust (Bill Seavers and Duffy Soto) decided to change 92Q to WMAK-FM...both mornings and afternoons were simulcast. "Dollar Bill" would not allow WMAK-AM to break away from the simulcast for Braves games (Braves
paid big $$ for 1300 to carry 'em) until 7pm, even though the Braves games normally began at 635p. We had to
tape delay for a 7pm start: if you've done a short delay (using reel-to-reels) you know what a nightmare that was.
and don't ask about the laugh tracks Bill Berlin and I would add to the Braves games...

Chris,

I could only imagine the logistics and horrors of a 3-hour baseball game tape delayed 30 minutes. Long ago I would tape the Paul Harvey weekend broadcast, 15 minutes long, rewind the tape quickly to hit the sponsor's time slot. That was a headache balancing reel technology and demanding sponsors. Those funeral home directors are a surly bunch at times.

WVOL was the only true Funk/Soul station of the 70's and early 80's, up until November of 1982, when Sam Howard decided to change WMAK-FM from Adult Standards to Urban. I was there when it all happened. There is a MAJOR misunderstanding when 92Q when Urban. It was November of 1982, NOT 1984! The calls were changed from WMAK to WQQK in 1984.

I got to think about this, but former KDF/(KDA-FM) jock Bob Cole worked at 92Q shortly after it was switched over to Urban. He moaned, b******, and hated it with a passion. He didn't last there long, as if he did show up for his airshift, he would be drunk off of his butt.

Sure it wasn't Dave Walton?

When Sam Howard (???) bought 92-Q, he flipped it to some horrible call letters and funeral home music, and did it even
last a year before going to Urban? I guess it was 1982, but I thought it was a little later. When exactly did Steve
leave? Seems like it was Jan or Feb (still cool/cold weather)when the subject of Steve heading South came up. I talked to
him every couple of days. I remember him trying to decide if he should go to Atlanta (Z-93.) I waffled with him
on it for a week or so. He was smart and ambitious and knew he could do it, so he jumped. Soon after, all hell broke loose
and it flipped. Regardless of how popular it was, nothing could have saved The Q and MAK from the impending disaster.

CR --- hahaha, I do remember the Braves stuff. God, how old am I??? What a joke that was. Not to bring up
a possible bad subject, cause I really have wondered --- what did Bill Berlin do after all that? He was as solid sounding
as it's been in Nashville, wouldn't you agree. Didn't he do some of the old Q/MAK ID's? I now admit, I manage to
forget more than I remember NOW...dammit. I hope he is still with us, but I don't know and apologize for not
keeping up with him. He was a pretty interesting guy, huh? Speaking of old timers --- know where Skinny Bobby Cook
is? Last time I talked to him was when he was in Paducah. Officially depressed now. How time flies////

when Sam bought WMAK-FM, it flipped to "Hit Parade"...a MOYL rip-off...but the calls stayed WMAK-FM

McCoy left for Z in February of '91 (I think). I visited when he was still doing a Saturday AM shift (in addition to the Mon-Fri)...probably 2nd weekend he was at Z. We went over to TBS to look around, and people there already knew who he was. Impressive. Steve also had offers from San Diego, Baltimore, and Miami. He obviously chose wisely.

Last I heard of Berlin, he was still living in Portland...last time I spoke with him he was doing security at TPAC (after the WSM/TNN overnight satellite gig went belly-up)

Bobby is still doing mornings in Paducah at WKYQ...heard him last June.
Speaking of feeling old...I've been doing weekends for 20 years now: Bobby got me on for "a few" weekend shifts at KX-104 just before the move out of Gallatin in Feb of '87. Stayed thru the change to WGFX "The Fox"...got fired in August of '90 for taking an approved vacation! Did a few weekends at WRLT...then got a call to go to WSIX Labor Day weekend '90. Now it's 6 days on-air...and more fill-in work than I can handle!

Is that the same Steve McCoy who is on The Steve & Vicki show on Star 94 Atlanta?
He has been on there since 1989. I think Steve did spent some time as dj at Z-93. Z-93 went from Top 40 to Classic Rock to Dave FM.

yes...same McCoy.
he left mornings at Z93 for KVIL Dallas...then returned as 94Q became Star

I worked with McCoy at Z for several years. Didn't he also do mornings at Power 99 before heading over to Star?

They tell me the memory is the first thing to go.

I remember reading about Steve working in Dallas before coming back to Atlanta. I not sure about McCoy ever being on Power 99. It is a guy name Domino who did the morning show on Power 99.
He is now in Dallas. Power 99 became 99X(new rock & alternative) in 1992.

you're right...I forgot about Power...that's where he first teamed up with Vicki: it was Z-93...Power...KVIL...
then to Star 94 (92Q Nashville before all that...)
