And 1360! I think it sounds great. Really. Drivin around today at around 5PM with the doo-wop on was just like 1961 and drivin around with the doo-wop on. Made me wanna go 80 across the bridge to Homestead ! Almost saw that WAMO sign at the end of the bridge.

Seems like 620's night coverage into Pittsburgh is worse than it was in 1988. This goes for 540 too. What gives? I know this is slightly off topic, but I bet Clarke knows the answer.

620 still puts a booming signal into the South Hills during daylight hours. I remember their night signal back in the day being much better than the current one though. Any chance they could build a night transmitter site SW of Pittsburgh and steer it back to throw a city grade signal over Jeanette? This would seem to keep it away from Milwaukee and Tampa.
From what I understand, Birach bought a station on 540 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland near Ocean City. They then moved that signal into the Greater DC market. Since 540 here could be frequently heard in DC they had to cut the daytime power back from 5K to around 3K watts in order to run both stations. That's what I had heard anyway.

Back in 1988, 620 would have been operating with 500 watts from the old WHJB nighttime transmitter site. That site was lost to developers in 1996, shortly before Bob bought the station.
During the FCC filing window a few years ago, Bob applied for increased nighttime power on 620, and was fought by Milwaukee at every turn. The CP that resulted would have been an expensive proposition and not resulted in much of a signal increase in Pittsburgh. The site was never built.

620 would have to build a large directional tower site to get any more power at night. That coupled with the rules that are in effect now limit how much coverage they could potentially have at night (protection to other stations is far greater then it was when 620 ran from the old Route 30 site). Basically the cost to throw several tall towers up with very little power gain hardly gets you any monetary return so it's usually not worth it.
540 in Pocomoke City, MD is still there, the calls were moved to 700 Walkersville, MD. Years ago WDMV had an application to move to someplace near DC on 540 but that fell by the wayside. And now due to a 'family fued' Walkersville is off the air! I don't know what changes were made at 540 but that signal is still listenable where I am below York day AND night

the only other thing I can think of is that the area surrounding their towers used to be heavily wooded property adjoining the old State Hospital, but in recent years it has been increasingly carved-up for office buildings and McMansions. Guess there is some possibility the results could affect ground conductivity? Personally I would not want to buy a $400K McMansion and have a 5000 watt radio tower lurking outside my bedroom window.

Back to liners...WKBN in Youngstown has a great promo for the Sunday morning polkas...the outcue is : Cause when we bought the station, the polka show came with it...almost drove off the road the first time I heard it, and considering Mark Driscoll is their voice, its even funnier...one of the few news/talk stations I've heard with a personality as a whole station...610 CKTB in St. Catherines, Ont is another. They're online...afternoon guy is amazing...
I live 1 mile west of North Hills Passavant Hospital and the WKHB 141 Watt pssa comes in loud and clear, I can even get the 50 watt Signal with my Radio Shack AM Antenna Boster, to listen to the Frank Powalski all night Polka Party.
Is it possible to keep the 141 watt signal all night? WTMJ Aims Stright North. Their signal does not even reach Ohio Day or Night. I too enjoy listing to the music after 7:15 pm Sitting on my frount porch,My Jackie listened in her Car, and one day it was still tuned to 620 when she went to work now she listens to Dr.Weiner.

I got the Power levels from the FCC web site "WKHB -Station info- view correspondence folder-psra ,It states power of 146 watts. Begining at 6am Aug through April. Full power May ,June, July. pssa states for July 8:45 to 9:15 146 watts, 9:15 to 9:45 141 watts, 9:45 to 10:45 62 watts. Letter is Dated 2-27 2007.
I do remember that letter. Something went wrong with the FCC's computer program, as many other stations received a power level far below what they had previously been authorized; our PSRA, for example, is 500 watts. The computations were made in conjunction with the 2007 changes to Daylight Savings Time. After a number of letters and complaints, the FCC sent out a notice that they would not institute the revised power levels.

Whatever power you put out at 8:45 to 10:45 is loud and clear at my house, By the way 103.1 is now also loud and clear at my house, along with the Parking lot at rt.19 and rt. 228 in cranberry. but driving around Cranberry it is overshadowed by y103 [102.9 Sharon]. however driving on rt 19 in wexford flats good signal.
