Funny, but true...

For those of us on this board who could be called the KIOL hopeful, I thought I'd share a funny that's also 100% true.
The other night I was driving home at about 1:15 in the morning and listening to KIOL. They were playing Van Halen, which by default is a fairly good band to play during the early morning hours. I admit I was a little tired, but no more so than usual.
When the station ID came on directly following the song, I dozed off for about 3 seconds. Is that guy boring or what?
Rock 103.7. This is Houston's Rock Station. Rock 103.7.
I've never had that happen before. My eyes have shut briefly to Kenny G, you know music that's carved and created to relax. But never have I drifted off to a sweeper or a station ID. I was totally weirded out.
It happened in a flash of a second and I didn't swerve off the road, but I had to put on some heavy (BLEEP) to make sure it didn't happen again. God knows KIOL doesn't play any of that.

And on another note, I guess I'm friends with Wendy Miller now. At least she recognizes me.
At an event the other night, I spoke with her and one of the KIOL engineers and I steered the conversation toward the direction of KIOL.
Their story is that KIOL is cemented. "We know our roots," Wendy told me.
They both said that Pat nor anybody else has any clue who will be working nights or overnights.
Apparently the Rock DJ contest at the Lord of the Rings Exhibit opening last Friday wasn't just for show. They're actually taking these contests seriously.
It looks like they really have no other prospects for air talent.
As much as I like Wendy as a person and as much as I admire Cumulus and Pat for trying to create a good, local product, this exemplifies how poorly put together KIOL has been.

The engineer the other night wasn't afraid to tell me his thoughts.
"You know man, we don't care about Arbitron. Those ratings are wrong anyways. As long as we hurt The Buzz a little bit, that's what matters."
He said this with said eyes.
"You can just see the people pacing around, scared to death. They want this (KIOL) to work, but they don't know what chance they have."
He responded personally to people there who said they were listening and could not overcome static and an interrupted signal.

You have to give them credit for being honest and sincere. However, are they really taking this station in a good direction? You decide.
