FUNNY FUNNY! The Edge in Phoenix Trying to Copy Indie 103.1?

It's not that KEDJ is trying to copy Indie piece by piece
It's hilarious that someone would try to make people think that they're the next Indie 103.1. If you listen for a few minutes, you'll get what I'm saying. Especially when they sound NOTHING like what Indie sounded

Indie played plenty of "hits" for their audience.

PPM is all about cume. They played to their small cume - not to the market cume. That is the difference.
and they we're successful in doing that...

Man! If you ever doubted this type of music caused "drain bramage" you need only read these posts.

I fail to see the humor in dismissing the audience of a format that attracts educated professionals as "brain damaged." Perhaps you should inform us of your musical preference, so we can unfairly stereotype it as well?

KDLD (using November as a reference) was 39th in upper income listeners, with an AQH persons of 1,000 of 'em. This compares to the leader in high income which had 21,000 AQH persons... and that is KIIS.

The next ranked stations in high income ($75 k+) in November of 2008 are KFI, KOST, KRTH, KROQ, KCBS and KBIG. Stations like KLVE and KSSE outranked it in upper income.

The same sort of thing applies with educational level if you look at qualitative data. It also explains why the station had bail bondsmen and pawn shops on as clients, too.

KDLD as Indie was just not mass appeal, and had no significant qualitative story to tell, either.

i don't get it why do most people on this board seem to discriminate against indie 1031 and its listeners? it f'n annoying! i wonder how most people on this board would feel if i talked about how bad their station is or their playlist is? honestly, just stop doing that! indie was a great cutting edge station, who cares about the rankings they had with certain demographics, flat out it was good, and people in the music industry feel the same way....

pisses me off too...

David:

We know. Indie wasn't successful in the way you define success.

What relevance does that have to the intelligence of its audience or alternative rock fans in general? I don't hear the same thing being said about KROQ listeners. Or Power 106, for that matter.

Jimmy,

Let me spell it out for you. Since intelligence is extremely hard to define, David used household income as a proxy, under the fairly reasonable assumption that, over a large population, more intelligent people tend to have higher household incomes than less intelligent ones. His point was, using the household revenue proxy, Indie didn't have a lot of "intelligent" people listening at any given point in time compared with other top-rated stations.

Remember, just because facts are uncomfortable doesn't make them less true.

I always thought the "intelligent" people (A.K.A. The wealthier side of the tax bracket) listened to AM Talk radio, NPR, iPods and Sirius XM Radio, not Indie 103.1. No offense to Steve Jones, but do you really think an educated person would listen to an hour of Steve Jones breathing in and out the microphone for an hour? Probably not...
Most wealthier people also spend less time listening to radio because they can afford other means of entertainment. Radio is only something they listen to in the car. I'm making an assumption and it could totally be wrong, but again, it's just a thought...

I'm in the music industry and I've always maintained that Indie was mediocre at best. The talent was lethargic and disengaged and the music selections were often marginal. I'll say it again: The fact that a song is different and unfamiliar doesn't necessarily make it good. As often as not, I heard songs on Indie that weren't that good. If that's what cutting edge means, fine, but "flat out good?" Not to my ear. If calling it like I see it is "discriminating," then I guess I'm just a big ol' bigot. Oh, and get a sense of humor...drain bamage, indeed. I'm quite amused.
