Funny juxtaposition on AM 740 at sunset

I was flipping around the AM tonight on my way home, and I stopped on WNOP Catholic Radio just before it was time for them to power down. (They go from 2500 watts to 30 watts at 6:15!) There's a Canadian station playing Standards on 740 AM, and right at 6:15 I hear "Jesus our Lord....had several hit records during the 1960s." Anybody got the 45s? I'd like to hear them.

Tell that funny bit to CBT(CBC Radio One)Toronto....that's their frequency which WNOP has to protect. (www.cbc.ca)

The CBC has not owned the former CBL for several years. It's now Adult Standards CHWO..I believe owned by the CHUM group. The CBC has been phasing out its AMs.

Thats Funny! Especially since I was the last voice on air at the Jazz Mansion before the final power off and their takeover. We made a lot of funny references that night 1/1/01. WNOP means Weird Nuns Offend People, We Never Offer Penaence etc. I remember they refused to power on at 6 am the next morning, feeling that they had to let the stick cool down from the hell that we raised that night.

Back between 79' and 82' when I was at WCIL-FM in Carbondale, Illinois, I was the jock at the control point of the remote system and would have the AM side (MOR) guy signal through the window at 8:15pm in the June hours to sign-off so that KDKA could roll into southern Illinois.... I, at times, during the baseball season would do a probable 'no-no' as I would flip the monitor over to AM-1020 on the speakers and wait for the sign-off cart to say "This is 1020/WCIL-Carbondale" and then flick the toggle down to shut it off... I would, at times, knowing the Pirates were on the air at that time (an hour ahead of us), then Key the FM board mike over the AM phone line (we had that on our RCA board for emergency simulcasts and such), then say "Stay tuned for Pirate's baseball, which we now join in progress on 1020/KDKA Pittsburgh"......Then power down and there the game would be in the heart of Cardinal and Cub country.....

That would be correct! Bill is still at Heidelberg as far as I know. I have not seen him since last summer

A Saluki Fan ?

Now when I was the GM at WTAO in Carbondale (89-91) I'd have CIL-AM on close to sunset and KDKA would be knockin at the door like you mentioned above. Now I live in Eastern Ohio no less then 35 miles from KD's tower and they get knocked all over the place from WBZ! Go figure.

By the way the Saluki's looked good Saturday on ESPN 2, hopefully they can kick some Missouri Valley a** at arch madness this weekend...would love to see them on TV next Monday night!

Did something similar when I was in high school although it wasn't powerdown, but a top of the hour ID. I ran the church programs on Sunday. We ran a program hosted by Victor Glenn (now deceased). They closed the program with the tag line "Our parting thought is always this: may the sunlight of God's love be yours now and forever. Ususally we would fill with some soft music, got to the top of the hour with the jingle ID and hit ABC Information News and then returned to secular programming.

For some reason, the program was running a few moments late. As the show was ending, they began the tag line....Our parting thought is always this, at which point I dumped the program, ran our PAMS Philadelphia Story top of the hour ID. Thus it was in fact...Our parting thought is always this....WRFD Columbus-Worhington with the calls being sung in the jingle package and the old ABC Information sounder rolling as the jingle faded.

I got a call from the GM telling me it would never happen again.

Re: A Saluki Fan ?

> I still remember hangin' with Canadian Earl Jive from 'TAO in the generation prior to yours and maybe the Salukis are peaking late and will make a run at the MVC in the coming days..... I am sure they will have quarter beers at "The Cellar" up the tracks near Main and Illinois Avenue... Picnic benches, concrete floor and spilt booze on the floor....

They ARE CHWO...but seldon say so

ALL the time they indentify themselves as "AM 740--Toronto". They are the "Frank 'n Dino" station of that city--in concert with the "classic" 1050-CHUM. A guy who hosts a "way back" show on Friday night will drop the CHWO calls...one of those on-air "bo-bos" they forgive the charming old guy for. They have a great signal along the east coast at night.

Re: A Saluki Fan ?

When I was at TAO my morning show consisted of Tom Miller (now at WJPF) and John Carney (now at KMOX- Two Johns no waiting) what I hoot those guys were in AM drive at TAO, broadcasting from the garage while I was trying to motivate my sales crew in the trailer next door!
