Funny signoff from WTAK (now WDJL)

Boy, does that bring back memories! I never remember TAK as the oldies station. All I remember is rock/urban mix then AOR then the switch to DJL as adult standards.

Here is a really funny and interesting signoff from WDJL (then WTAK-AM), dated 1985. Daytime stations should do things like this again.

LOL.

Thanks for posting this! It's been years since I heard that signoff, I was probably 16 or 17 yo at the time this was recorded (boy I feel old). I remember all those visits going up to see my grandmother who lived near Arab at the time and hearing this signoff many times! What a humorous and clever way of voicing their displeasure with daytime-only operation. :D

I used to play that sign off every day as I finished my shift at WTAK. I worked there from 1987 to 1992 as Brian Jeffries. I would add on to it and do insane stuff. Sometimes I would take the sound effect record with those crickets and let them play after the signoff was done. Then I would put the turn table into neutral and run into the transmitter room and wait for the last "chhhiirrr p p p p " and shut 'er down. I hate political correctness(I never signed up for it) and would love to play that sign off again!

wow, I was -1 when this was recorded. I never got to hear TAK on AM, even though I was 7 when TAK moved to FM and I first found them as "The Rock of Huntsville - 106 TAK", with Chris Corley doing the voicovers.

It's definitely ballsy, I'll give them that!

Wow, this brings back memories! That was a great signoff, although I had no idea it predated the rock format. I lived in Huntsville from 1989 to 1992 and listened to WTAK frequently. Brian Voice Guy, I remember you and your afternoon/evening show, especially "Five for the Road". That was a great feature. I also remember the Tom and Kris morning show and the Sunday afternoon "Electric Medicine Show". WTAK played a great mix of classic rock and new rock and was the best thing on radio in the Huntsville market at the time. They played a lot of tracks I've never heard anywhere else, like "Let the Day Begin" by The Call. When it got dark, there wasn't much to choose from. I'd usually try to pull in Nashville's WKDF or just listen to tapes and CDs. Thanks for that "blast from the past".
