furman/doyle drama

anyone following the furman/doyle drama? first it was Doc in andy's cross hairs, now it's doyle. the whole thing seems contrived at boosting ratings for the furball. when i talked to him a few months, via email, about his need to drop "the bigger one," he instead opted to continue doing it - again for a micro-ratings boost. pretty much anything to create controversy is what he's after, IMO. and it smacks of a man on his last leg. sad, really, because i think when andy isn't hunting, he's actually a fairly good interviewer. but case-in-point, when interviewing rich franklin yesterday andy put dog fighting and UFC fighting in the same sentence - rich was taken aback by it, and rightfully so. this thing with doyle, IMO, is just one of several attempts for andy to get attention. shame he doesn't realize that a quality show will get the same results.

And for those of you saying 96.5 needs to be 24/7 live and local, guess where the highest ratings were? You guessed it! During Glenn Beck and Dave Ramsey. O'Reilly even did OK in spots. The ratings during midday were either flat or slightly up/down. Not much change. Andy and Mancow were down. Now what?

With sincere apologies to midwest. Clever name.

I agree. It all sounds like despiration. There was another post mentioning how it was W L W and the cast around him that was giving him fame. I would guess that to be true. After all those years it appears he doesn't even know why he shouldn't be saying the bigger one.

I know more than a few folks at Cumulus. Their all shaking their heads. Any idea how long this will keep going? And what about the PD? He has no clue either. I guess Atlanta is calling the shots.

Without a doubt. A lot of these heritage AM talkers have tens of thousands of long-time listeners, and in reality they're listening because they trust the station more than they enjoy the individual hosts, and it'll take a lot of effort to pry them away from that station. When someone gets fired from said heritage station, or chooses to leave, and ends up on another local station with just as good of a signal, that host won't have nearly as many listeners because all those select listeners are listening to the new program on the heritage station. It's a psychological thing. It's almost like those select listeners feel that since the heritage station let go of one of their hosts, that host must no longer be worth listening to.

how very true, especially in a talk market where there is no competition. i have only lived here for 4 years, having moved from the chicago market, and the first thing that i couldn't get over was how CC owned everything. so like in chicago if a host went from WGN to WLS, it would be a huge deal, and you could expect the ratings to be impacted according to the quality of the move and talent. here, you have Ma Station(s) and that's it. i applaud Cumulus for what they're doing, but andy is digging his grave. when the 2AGs start in Oct., it'll be interesting i hear (if i can stand listening for more than a minute) if they follow the doings of furman. this whole thing is like competition gone very, very wrong.

Have you listened to Doyle though? He is as bad as Andy's hyperbole makes him out to be. Also he can continue the attacks if done right and still have a quality show, it just needs to be moderated and done more by the station voice than the talent, especially since he can quickly make himself sound like a bitter ex clear channel employee rather than someone trying to take down the competition. If I was PD of Supertalk I'd drop the british chick and the NPR sounding voice over guy, outsource full production to the voiceover talent and have him do 95% of the attacks on the other station through liners and promos while letting Furman concentrate on providing better sports talk, with a very rare and occasional stab at the other guys.

The dog fighting/UFC comparison has been made before, especially in the early days of UFC. Speaking of which, should Lapam start using another metaphor for an undersized player who gives it his all when he says "Its not the size of the dog in the fight its the size of the fight in the dog".

ummm....yeah, that is nothing like what andy's former employer does. ::)

i tried listening today. one of the first things is he starts ripping on 1530. sad to see what a pitiful show that has become. i thought the show was andy's. who's the kid? he keeps talking over andy and its very annoying. he's terrible.

When did he talk about 1530? I'm not saying your wrong but I just don't remember hearing it. Also, I kinda like the kid. He has made the show listenable and he brings Furman down to earth and I kinda think it makes it entertaining from Furman's side and knowledgeable sports talk from the kid's side. Just my take on things.

Didn't say it was original, just said it works.

From the looks of the last book, no one is listening

If this board were a true sample, 96.5 would be the biggest station in the market. Also I heard there is another company that does phone surveys for radio listening in the market...at least from what a co-worker told me.
