Further Sports Station Changes

Barron covered it in the Chron several days ago but never saw any chit-chat about it here...

John Lopez, formerly of the "Monsters" on KBME 790, moves to KILT 610 to do mornings with Marc Vandermeer.

Other "Monster" - Ted DeLuca - currently with various temp partners including David Dalati, some Fox Sports guy, and even Michael Garfield!

Apparently the press release said the new uppity-up hire at 610 brought Lopez in to go with the "changes" coming to 610.

What does this say about the further slump to 790?
The Monsters were already in an odd line-up following the firing of Brad Davies and Craig Roberts at 6-8am and then again 11am-3pm...with syndicated Dan Patrick sandwiched in-between.

Have been listening to Lopez with Vandermere this week and IMHO it doesn't sound good. They began the dreaded top 10 list on several topics and the old "What do you think is the best...." call to potential callers. That's a clear sign that they cannot generate anything substantive on any topic. A good show can find the most mundane or most excersised topic and continue to milk it in an interesting and entertaining way. They had a good thing with Adam Wexler teamed with Vandermere the last couple of weeks. Where Wexler lacked in entertainment value (ala John & Lance) he more than made up for in his ability to stretch a topic. John Lopez's sports IQ is there, but his ability to communicate in an entertaining or interesting way seems to be lacking. I did not listen to him on 790, but he should have honed his skills there. KILTAM has a real gem in Wexler and are wasting him at night. What a waste. Looks like another poor decision for CBS Radio. The direction they are heading, they are coming to the point where the next programming or personnel error they make could get the attention or ire of the Texans or Rockets. With multiple sports stations in the market, these pro franchises can certainly have their pickings as to quality sports stations for their affiliations. In this market no station is safe from becoming an also-ran.
