How long will the low ratings continue. This station reaches the Triangle and Triad!!! How about doing an Easy-Listening Format with a huge playlist??? I bet that it would do ALOT better than WZTK is now!!! An All-Sports/Sports Talk Format is also an option! They could air the Atlanta Braves!!

With the collapse of WSJS, WZTK is now the borderline highest rated news talk station in the market. It seems WPTI and WZTK are battling for that #1 spot, even though it may be down on the totem poll in the radio ratings overall scale of things. I doubt they will flip to EASY LISTENING!!!!!! WITH A HUGE PLAYLIST!!!??!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Which is always interesting to me because we know why people listen to WPTI with Rush but what is so compelling with WZTK's format in terms of the big conservative talk? Does Neil Boortz really have that much of a draw? I guess so if they're able to compete with Rush. I also like listening to Michael Savage at night on WZTK, he's an underrated host.

It's all about making money. Ratings are nice and they keep the masses hopping on the internets, but money keeps the transmitter running.

I agree 100%. Its all about billing and the advertisers getting results, at least on the local level. I guess they could drop the talk and start playing 12 in a row and be one of many music stations, but would they make as much money? Of course I realize the idea of making money is an extremely evil concept these days.

Mentioning making money is almost as evil as actually making money these days, too.

Sometimes people only see things from their perspective. People who only see the surface have been trained over the years that "#1 HIT MUSIC STATION" should mean more to a station because they've heard that over and over, rather than "UNDISPUTED TOP-OF-THE-HEAP REVENUE-PRODUCING MACHINE." It might mean more to a gangly, awkward lowest-common-denominator-likes-the-station-because-they-sent-some-schwag-forum-posting listener to be part of "the cool gang who listens to Station X" but from the station's perspective, it takes money to survive. They want to impress business people and decision makers and spenders, not so much people who will listen to the station under certain conditions and only at certain times, as long as it pays off for them.

[Besides, when's the last time you heard a station advertise how much money they make? "We're the Triad's #1 revenoo-makin' station!" That would stand out. If Average Listeners heard that more often, they'd focus on that more, but that would seem 'crass' or something. Maybe it would also help educate Average Listeners about how businesses work. Then again, probably not a lot of stations want to brag about what money they're (not) making....]

OMG! We gotta start a new post with liners we "wish" we could run!

WZTK is actually recovering in the ratings some. I think it's because of the Brad & Britt show. Everyone I know really likes that show. It's intelligent and topical without being too conservative or too liberal. They also have really good guests. I for one want to see ZTK stick around.

I agree, I also like the fact that a news talk station has such a powerful signal that reaches both Raleigh/Winston.

On a side note that whole "it doesn't matter about the ratings only about the revenue" is a sketchy road to tread. That usually is nice talk for a station ran by sales people who give a flying f*** whats on the air.

Not sure if that would be a good thing when listeners struggle through seemingly too many commercials on the air as it is. I can see someone having to struggle through 12 commercials in a row and then later being reminded that the station is the Top Revenue Station. That may not go over well with the average listener who wants as little interruptions as possible in ther music unfortunately.

Oh yeah, it wouldn't be helpful. But if some of them did it, over time, then they might get people trained off of "the only measure of success for a radio station is to have the most listeners." :)

It is all about the $$$$! ZTK is in the and unique position of covering two of the largest markets in North Carolina (and covering them well). The station develops enough cume between the two that it is a good sense buy for the regional advertiser. Their sales staff has done a good job and I suspect the station is quite profitable.

Xtalker hit the nail on the head. The Ratings are always a great measurement of success but unless you have access to the money demos you are barking up the wrong cash register. I understand that XKT does very well financially and that my friend is the bottom line.

don't talk stations/shows already brag about making money?
both Rush and Car Talk regularly mention money-making
commercials or websites or both.

But those are just hosts saying that they sell stuff on a website or "shameless commerce division", or that they do a good job selling stuff through advertisements, or encouraging people to underwrite NPR programming or whatever.

If there were a station-to-station comparison of one station bragging about what the station makes compared to anyone else, then some people would eventually notice that revenue is more important than ratings for "the future of WZTK or WXYZ."

Look at the ZTK cume in the money demos for both Raleigh and Greensboro markets. The right sales staff an pull that off and make a lot of money with it. I would guess ZTK's cume is comfortably 150,000 or more a week (combining the two markets). The right sales person can make a truck load in talk with that kind of cume. ZTK is likely the ONLY station in either market that sells local commercials in BOTH markets. A rare occasion of not paying much attention to Arbitron - we've all talked about it at one time or another, but seldom is it done.

Is this station trying to please two markets and in reality pleasing nobody? 'ZTK is getting a less than 1 rating in the Triangle and less than 2 in the Triad. ???

The listener has no clue about "markets". That is real inside thinking. Listeners don't care where you are coming from as long as what you do is relevant to them! ZTK does a good job of including reference to each individual city in their coverage area, and they cover topics of interest to the broad area. Those of you who fall for the Aribtron trap just have to understand that Don Curtis is laughing all the way to the bank on that one!

Here's another piece of math for those of you who are privileged to the "numbers": add the cume of ALL of the news/talk stations in both the Raleigh and Greensboro markets and I believe you will find that the format is alive and well in both places. Somebody please do the math!

News & Talk cume total for Raleigh/Greensboro, not including non-comms, 580,000 with a lot of duplication.
Or, about the same as G105's total in both markets.

surf: since you brought it up....didn't the Showgram simulcast in GSBO?
what happened with that? you know, details as to 'why' it did and
why it doesn't.
