Future use of shortwave spectrum?

There has been some discussion on these boards about datacasting on shortwave, particularly by WINB. Such transmissions are used for distributing real-time financial information, bypassing any latency that might exist with the internet and other distribution methods.

The FCC is now considering rulemaking that would modernize the use of the HF bands for such services. There have already been a number of experimental licenses and tests with these digital datacasting formats.

And the proposal: ECFS

Dry, technical reading, but a glimpse into the possible future use of shortwave with new technology. Some of the tests described in the proposal have apparently been heard by SWDXers, who have reported hearing digital transmissions, some as wide as 50 kHz, at various frequencies. There are already some applications filed with the FCC for several of these stations.

The “utility” bands on SW are pretty empty these days, so plenty of spectrum to work with.
