Forgive me if this has been posted.. but the other night, I wanted to check out that new show (Over There) to see what all of the hype was about (which I heard the show actually tanked).. and after leaving my TV on while doing some work at the computer, I noticed that FX does not sensor foul language. I heard some pretty bad words on several of their shows. Im not one to complain about cursing, but my question is has this channel always been like this? And, is there a loophole or something as to how they get around being able to use this language?

Actually, does it really matter since its not a main channel (like ABC, CBS, NBC)?

Thanks.
______________

They haven't always aired foul language (as when they first signed on they aired Greatest American Hero and Wonderwoman). And since they're not broadcast, the FCC can't regulate content.

They're not a broadcast network so the FCC doesn't have much (if any) authority over what content they may or may not show. This is not the first show on FX to push the boundries. Nip/Tuck, The Shield, Rescue Me...there's a reason this channel is called The Poor Man's HBO.

I watched the recent premieres of the two new FX series "Starved" and "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia". Both shows were definitely on the explicit side, but to their credit, FX did complete "black out" ratings tags (with the whole screen black, and the rating icon plus an explanation of its meaning centered on the screen) before each show, as well as the a large rating icon in the standard upper left position for a while. Additionally, during both shows, several spots explaining the purpose and utility of the "V-Chip" were shown. I think they seem to be making a responsible effort.

I would guess that eventually, TVs will be programmed by default to show a TV rating as part of the on screen display, as viewers flip channels.

Why not have an opt out for those of us who care less about ratings, as they are stupid, useless, and annoying.
If parents don't want their children watching specific programs they should spend more time with their kids and see what the hell they are doing and not let the bloody TV babysit them!
______________

I saw a TV a few months back that already did that (didn't think to jot down the make or model number, though).
______________

- sarcasm on -

Now now now toby...we all know that would mean those parents who bitched and moaned to have these ratings in place and stickers on CD's would actually have to be responsible. We can't have that!

My parents did not need a v chip or tv rateings to decide what my sisters and I should not be watching. They actually did their jobs and payed attention to what we were watching and if something came on they did not want us to watch they turned it off or turned on something more appropriate. Immagine that, parents actually doing their jobs. I'm the same way with my neices. If something comes on that they should not be watching, I turn off the tv or radio and actaully do something with them. TV is not a baby sitter and some parents and other care givers don't understand that concept.

Although the FCC can't regulate them for indecency (yet..?) they can be gotten for obscenity based on so-called "community standards" whatever that means. That would be a job for the local DA I beleive.

How can they regualte by community standards since there is no city of lisence?

And my parents didn't care. Now I have the urge to kill and vote Nader!

People calm down.

The plus side to the rating system is that it allows FX to air programs with explicit content. Not the other way around. The ratings system helps bcause it gives FX the ability to put whatever it wants on and when the complaits come in they can say it was rated TV-MA so it's your fault for watching.

There's the silver lining....

Umm...do you not notice sarcasm when you see it? Good Lord!

I have some fond memories of my dad sneaking (and taking me as well) to my uncle's house so we could watch as my mom would call it "the devils channel" to watch HBO for boxing or some raunchy comedy from Dangerfield or some other movie that I know wasn't ever going to be viewed in our house....I laugh about it now but at least I know who was allowing me to see someting or not...television was not my babysitter...

parents should be the controllers of viewing ..not a chip...
