Fybush Atlanta Tour Concludes

Scott Fybush's Atlanta radio tour concludes this week with the ramblin' WREK from Georgia Tech. You'll see both the studios and transmitter site, both on the Tech campus.

Our guide was WREK's chief engineer, Thomas Shanks, a young man whose IQ is somewhere on the other side of the stratosphere.

Interesting. The texts refers to a ten bay Jampro antenna, but the tower in the picture has 12 bays of Super Penetrator. Do they have a couple of spare bays as an aux? Or did I count wrong?

You counted right - it's a 12 bay. Fybush made a typo.
WREK has a CP to go 100kW. Also - I think Thomas has graduated and they have a new chief now - I don't know his name. He's probably too busy to show up here on R-I.....

Thomas told us that building the 100kw was not a reality given the current financial situation. He was hoping for some major financial help from a potential benefactor.

The power increase will require a directional antenna. Because of the pattern it would most likely need to be a panel style which could easily cost $200-300K. And their current tower would need to be replaced because it could never handle a panel. That power increase could easily cost $500-750K.
Maybe SSSSsssssnake or Thomas could elaborate.......

I did indeed make a typo - thanks to several eagle-eyed readers for counting the bays better than I could!

All fixed now.

I remember Dan Radakovich (Tech's athletic director) was talking a while back about using WREK to broadcast/simul Tech football and basketball games if Tech couldn't find a suitable commercial FM partner for 790 (nevermind the issues of commercial programming on a non-com). Talk of that stopped when True Oldies filled that role. That might have pulled out any proposed funding for WREK's move to 100kW.

You are correct, TECH is a four letter word, that's what they teach people at UGA how to count to four.... ;D

You heard about the Georgia/Tech game where Tech was getting their usual beat down? The frustrated Tech eggheads started throwing dynamite at the Georgia students. The Georgia students lit the sticks and threw them back! (RIP Lewis Grizzard)

Talking about being able to count-I happen to remember it was a TECH quarterback during the UGA-Tech game in 2004 when the QB for Tech threw the ball out of bounds deep in UGA territory late in the 4th quarter thinking it was 3rd Down (it was really 4th down!) and UGA took the ball over on downs and won 19-13.
